I found a praying mantis cocoon, where can I place it?
Comments (2)They like clumps of grasses. If you have any ornamental grasses, or patches of wild grasses, stick it in among the (dried) stems. Otherwise 1) protected from wind, 2) where water will not soak in or accumulate 3) where no one will step on it, 4) where there will be some [small] insect life....See MoreWhere to place praying mantis egg casings?
Comments (10)When I had a fairly dense hedge of Graham Stuart Thomas, I could count on three or four egg cases each year in that 36' long hedge. It was in too much sun and the cases tended to hatch on the same days that I was pruning that hedge. One thing I learned and never found a solution to....little guys and gal PMs are cannibals. When they come tumbling out of the big case, they are hungry. And they find siblings to be tasty. So, why didn't you disperse the siblings, Ann, get them to other roses where they could be happy? Because I tried, everything from blades of grass to blowing on them. Those tiny PMs are so delicate that anything I did, crushed them. Lesson learned....move the cases before they hatch....which is why knowing what hatched ones look like becomes important....See MoreQuestion on Praying Mantis Eggs?
Comments (10)Jean, the invasive Chinese mantids, now very common in the States, seem to be the usual culprit of the hummingbird murders. They are even responsible for the decline of our native mantis species. Upstate, the others have given you the reason for my dislike of mantids. If they would keep their crummy little claws off my butterflies, bees, wasps, assassin bugs, and ladybugs, I might stop evicting them. They are absolutely not welcome in my gardens....See MoreWhite praying mantis
Comments (1)Might be a European Mantis (Mantis religiosa) or Chinese Mantis (Tenodera aridifolia sinensis), both can be quite variable in color. The Chinese mantis was introduced as a bio control and can be found almost everywhere (quite common here in MI) the bio control kind of backfired as it eats just about anything and everything it can get hold of....See Morelynn_ark
