HAVE: Fall Plant Swap in Forsyth County

Start potting up all those extra plants in your yard and get ready for the plant swap to be held at the Forsyth County Agriculture Building located at 1450 Fairchild Rd in Winston Salem on September 26. Bring your extra plants to swap and perhaps come away with something that you have always wanted, but never found for your own gardens.

Craig Mauney, Forsyth County Horticulture Agent, will have a list of plants considered invasive to refer to so as not to invade the neighborhood. Also, if you have a plant that you're unsure of the name, bring it on and he'll try to tentatively identify it for the trade.

This swap is open to anyone that wants to trade plants, not only to Master Gardeners, so tell your neighbors and friends. If you have a plant to swap, you can attend.

All plants should be labeled with the botanical name, common name accepted if botanical name not known. You can write on a stick or even the side of the pot as long as it's labeled.

The actual swapping will begin at 11:00AM, so get there early to set up your plants and look over all the others.

The swap will go like this:

All the plants will be put together in a designated area. At 11:00 AM, we will call out for everyone to go in and get one plant. Once everyone has gotten one plant, we'll call out for everyone to go for another. This will continue until all plants are gone or until we just can't go any more.

Good Morning Gardeners,

PreSwap - Are you guys doing any prewapping before the swap? If so, I'm interested in unusual hostas, ferns, unusual colored daylillies (no orange) & bergenia. I have plenty toad lillies, purple siberian iris, perennial begonias & lemon balm to swap or if your looking for something in particular let me know and I'll see if I have it in my garden for swapping.

What kind of plants can I bring? Anything that you would like to share. Just remember that it needs time to adapt to its new home before winter, so things like irises which are best shared in the middle of the summer, might not be something you want to share now. A lot of times, something that youve had years and years and think everyone must have, is something that someone else just canÂt live without. IÂve had people come to my gardens and pick out plants that IÂve had so long, I figured everyone has it and thereÂs no possible way that I should take it to a swap. Then when I get to the swap, someone asks for it. Also, spring is the time for annuals. If youÂre planning on sharing annuals, you might want to wait until the spring swap. Should I bring the kids? Sure, bring the kids, but while the swapping is going on, to prevent them being trampled, please ask them to remain in a place away from the swapping. What if a plant is invasive? WhatÂs invasive for you might not be for me. Or vice versa. If itÂs heavily invasive and you know for sure it is, like Kudzu, please, donÂt bring it. If you donÂt know that itÂs invasive or not, Craig Mauney is planning on having a list of invasive plants so we can look it up. Can I swap seed? YES! A lot of people prefer to start their plants from seed. If youÂre swapping seed, please be sure to have them bagged up in individual bags for swapping. Such as if youÂre sharing sunflower seed, and have lots of them, put a few in a little bag, and bag up lots of little bags so someone wonÂt take off with your entire stash. There is also a seed swap in January in High Point every year, so if you like youÂre welcome to attend that, also. Start saving those seeds! How should the plants be presented? Bulbs cuttings and bare root plants are very welcome. Just remember that if itÂs barefoot, you should be sure that itÂs easily transplanted so as not to become too wilted and damaged beyond saving. Some plants wilt very easily and if wilted too much the plant structure will break down and it might not be saved. The preferred way to present a plant is to pot it up a month or so before the swap so that it can be adapted well and you will have a nice plant to share. Remember; think of how you like to receive plants. If you wouldnÂt want to take it home, then someone else probably wouldnÂt either. You should always use sterile potting mix whenever possible instead of garden soil. This ensures a healthy plant being shared. IÂve already started potting up things and even am trying my hand at rooting stuff for the swap. Everything should be marked. The best way to share bulbs is to put them in small bags and write the name of the plant on the outside of the bag. If you donÂt know the cultivar name of the bulb, thatÂs ok, just put something like "Oriental Lily Â Orange" to identify what it is. All plants should be tagged somehow. I cut up old mini blinds, or use Popsicle sticks and write the name of the plant on them. IÂve even been known to write the name of the plant on the side of the pot. If you donÂt know the botanical name, put the common name on it. If you have a plant and donÂt know what it is, pot it up, bring it any way, and bring a blank tag so that maybe someone can identify it. With a bunch of Master Gardeners, someone should know what a plant is.

I love trying new plants. I can try layering both of these clematis for you, I just don't know if they'll be ready in time for the swap, but I can certainly try. As for hostas, the only hostas I have for trade are blue cadet and golden tiara. I also have some nice named daylilies, ted spicer iris, and butter and sugar siberian iris not available. Are you interested in any of these?

Please accept my apology for the late notice. Between the recent weather issues and my parent company (I work for AIG Retirement.) things have been hectic. In addition, I did not schedule (I did try.) a spring swap. Between being unable to find a suitable date before it became too hot and being extremely busy at work I could not make the swap happen. The Fort Bend County Plant Swap - Fall Edition is scheduled for October 18th from 9 AM to 1 PM (usually ends earlier). Due to the recent hurricane I want to encourage gardeners to come regardless of their ability to bring plants. Even if you do not have plants come anyway bring your favorite dish and enjoy a pot luck luncheon with gardening friends. For those of you with new sun gardens I want to encourage you to bring those shade plants to trade and share. For those along the coast please consider coming. Many of us further inland want to see you. I will have a few plants to share and I have several sets of gardening hand tools and BBQ sets and hand made bird houses and feeders to give away as door prizes. As a reminder the Fort Bend Plant Swap is a free event open to all gardeners. All plants are swapped or traded. NO money changes hands. The pot luck luncheon is a great way to join in especially if you have not plants. Bring your favorite dish. My wife and I will be bringing vegetarian chili. If you have never been to a plant swap before I encourage you to come. They are a great way to learn about plants that do well in this area. The plant swap is located in Community Park in Missouri City. The location is convenient for all of Houston and is especially convenient for Brazoria County and points south and west of Houston. I wanted to thank everyone that attended the swap for their warmth and generosity of sharing your plants/seeds/cuttings, knowledge, and food. Thank you Shari for hosting also. I really enjoyed meeting all of you. I came home with so many seeds and cuttings and plants. Sure, you can do special personal swaps if you like, but those should be kept out of the general swap and done off to the side. You will need to work things out between the two of you to do so.

How's everyone doing with their potting up? I've got lots of stuff rooting, we'll see how that goes. maybe i'll have a ton of different things to share.

I just potted up 8 rice paper plants. we'll see how they do. I've had several requests for this plant even though it travels underground quite a bit. So, if you want one, please let me know so I can put your name on it. otherwise, they're going into the open swap.

I'd be ever so excited if I found some crocosmia. lol But, being able to spend most of a Saturday doing "Planty" things sure beats what I do most Saturdays....hehe

Hi guys,
The swap is only a month away! I've been busy potting, rooting, etc for anything I can.
I'm looking for a plant. Asphodeline lutea. AKA Jacob's Rod. Does anyone have it? If so, can we do a special trade?

Yes, squirrelspur, it was a great swap! Thank you all for attending! We had a whopping 28 people at our very first annual Forsyth County MGV swap! That was a GREAT turnout for a first swap. (heck, it's a great turnout for any swap!) Craig was very impressed and very pleased and has already given me permission to have another one in the spring. Next one will be held next year at the same place right after the MGV plant sale at the Arboretum at Tanglewood.

Once again, thanks to all that attended and watch GW for details on the spring swap. Also, if you would like to be emailed directly about the upcoming events, just send me your name and email address and I'll put you on the list. Rootdigger gets up a seed swap in High Point in Jan, so that's another event to look forward to as well as the spring swap in HP.

Hope everyone had a great time and got lots of good plants!
