Fast and Furious - Ember Glow

I purchased an Ember Glow from a reputable website in May. I was very dissapointed with what I received. All I received was a stub with a leafless green stem sticking out. Here is a picture of the same stub in August. Not only has it shot up in size, it's formed a "Y" and has small buds forming. AMAZING!!!!

I feed regularly. They have a slow release osmocote added to the soil plus I fertilize once a week with a solution of miracle grow tomato food 18-18-18, fish & seaweed emulsion and a touch of Superthrive. Every month or so I will toss a bit of epsom salts into the pot for good measure. This works for me. I get my plants to bloom young with this solution. This is a pic of a young Ecuador pink. She had 10 blooms. I had to put her up on a stand because the flowers were bigger than the plant!

I would definitely keep it. Ginkgos are great trees and although they are slow growing at first, but they do speed up. That tree has put in a lot of years to get to that size, and I bet you'd be surprised how quickly it will start to fill out on that side. Definitely prune off any dead limbs. My ginkgo will put on 1-2" of growth on the ends of most limbs every year if there is sufficient rain. Give it some time to shoot out some sprouts on that side, and I bet you'll be surprised how fast they will grow. A tree that size has a well developed root system to feed them. There is nothing wrong with an odd shaped tree, it gives it character. Especially a strong wooded tree like a ginkgo.

Parrot Jungle is not out of the woods yet. It is still on the Shovel watch list. One really strinking bloom, perfect looking though it was, does not make up for the prior two years. Plus its might be hard to tell from the picture but I was just about on the ground for this shot. The flower was blooming way down in the folliage. It better grow out of that quick as I do not keep daylilies that bloom down in the folliage. Yes, it is common on newly planted ones but they have good reason. This one has been here three years now. But it sure was pretty.

I don't think you killed the plants. Amac even with the risk of overwatering, I would water the heck out of those plants to flush out some of that fertilizer. With the closed drainage holes, the fertilizer hasn't had an opportunity to run out so it's been sitting there by the roots for a month. Also, I would not use a rooting fertilizer. That's fine the day you plant into the ground, but after that I think it sets the plants back. JMO of course. If you want to use the flowers as cut flowers, I would be tempted to cut them now if the plants are going downhill fast. Hydrangea blooms wont fade too much by next week. It all depends on how fast the plants spring back now that the holes are opened. See what they look like in 24 hours. In the long run, they'll probably be fine. ~MH

Gary,that isn't Ember Glow.EG is yellow with an orange corolla edge.Trumpets are nodding.Checkout the picture in the gallery at BGI.

No That last picture is of my Ecuador Pink. I was just showing the last picture as an example of how my fertilizing regimen is allowing me to get nice flushes from very young plants. If you read my last posting it is clearly identified as ecuador pink. The first two pictures are of the same plant of ember glow over a 4 month span. Sorry that you got confused.

It's amazing that all you need is some brug wood and some soil! They root in no time and develop so quickly. I received a mail-order plant that was totally wilted several weeks ago. It's now doubled in size!

You may want to plant it in the ground in a protected spot (a little afternoon shade?). I found that in th beginning, I tended to overwhelm my cuttings with care (i.e., water and fertilizer). In the first year, I don't do that any more, and my Bryg cuttings have responded very well. In the 2nd year I do large tubs and fertilizerrrrrrrrrr and water. I have learned to be patient. Good luck. BTW, love that pink.

I am here in NY for just the summer..until Oct...so I have to keep containers small for now so I can fit all of the darn things in my car with my 3 dogs!! I will repot when i get home.
