I've had a terrible cold all week (Katie is our little Bio-hazzard -- LOL!). I could really use a nice hot cup of coffee this morning. Guess I better go down and make one now! Cool passion flower.

Congratulations. I think that might be P. morifolia. A pic of the foliage would help and that is a fruit. If it's morifolia the ripe fruit will be dark purple and the arils inside are bright orange.

Dave they start as parasites then become little Typhoid Mary's. lol I never got sick until my kids started preschool. Once they got around other kids they brought every germ known to mankind home. Of course they just had to share with me. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Dave you need a good peppermint tea with honey!! I sure hope you shake that cold and make sure it is only a cold!!

Lucy, I have a malabar spinach, it is new to me. I was told it is edible? Do you know and have you ever tried it?

Mary I have NO idea about the spinach. Googled it, YES it is edible ...what do you know lol. I needed something to grow up the topiary,that is really what I am growing it for. It is new to me too.

It's P. morifolia. You probably got the seeds from me. Don't eat it. I don't think it's toxic but tastes nasty. My sugar gliders won't even eat it. You might also want to wear gloves when you pick the ripe fruit. The skin and pulp stain purple and the arils stain red/orange. Malabar spinach is edible. If you like okra you'll probably like it. The flavor of the leaves and stems is fine but it has the same mucilaginous texture as okra, like sucking down a loogie, blech! The seeds are a nice addition to salads and pasta, not slimy with a peppery flavor but the pulp around the seeds also stains purple if it's a red malabar spinach. There's also a white variety.

I leave the purple seeds for the birds :-) I guess both the purple and orange would make super dying material! I used to dye easter eggs with natural things.

Now I go and look up if it is a hardy vine or not for my zone.

Lucy, your Passion flower is beautiful. I will take a cup of tea. I drink tea all day. They say it keeps you young. I look like I am 19 I have been told. Of course I know this is not the truth. LOL

Definitely not cold hardy. It's a zone 10 or warmer passie.

oh man what am I going to do with ALL of the vines that are growing everywhere :-( Karyn do I cut the vine back? and can I just dig out the vine before frost, pot it up...Oh well...I guess now a GH comes into play right? You keep them going? Dormant? I knew it was to good to be true to have my own passies and not just look at yours in the pictures :-(

You can dig it up and keep it in a pot somewhere warm and bright. The tropical varieties don't go dormant but I do cut them way back when it's time to move them. They don't need nearly as much water inside as they do outside. BTW you can root the stems that you cut off. Like you'll need anymore plants to protect from the cold. lol

I have a Malabar Spinach vine growing in a small pot.
It's only about 6 inches high and its green not the red.
Do they normal grow real slow. I started it months ago.
The plant looks good just small but the leaves are getting large.
Do you know if the green blooms like your red one?

Dorothy it is the same. Mine looked just like it when it was baby spinach lol I rarely look at the leaves though. Because the blooms are just gorgeous how it looks hanging over the top. It grows SO FAST it is not funny. Got to nib it back a lot. Mine gets LOTS of water...of COURSE>..it is ME we are talking about hahahahaha and is in the ground.

Dorothy Malabar spinach starts off slow but really grows like crazy in the heat. The green variety also gets berries but they are a greenish white, not dark purple. Both colors taste the same. Read my previous post about eating the Malabar spinach. lol

Beautiful Lucy.. You can start Passi cuttings in water or I prefer Floral Foam and a little rooting hormone powder.. You cut the FF into 1" cubes soak them dust the cutting stick it in .. I use the containers that mushrooms come in or something like that change the water once in a while.. The roots grow thru it then just pot it up.. Most are very easy to root..I had seed for the M Spinach not sure if I planted it or not..LOL Yours is Beautiful!!
