black swallowtail chrysalis

Hello,
I planted some host plants this year to attract butterfies. Currently, I have fennel growing in two ceramic containers near my butterfly garden. Two black swallowtail caterpillars are munching away and my understanding is they will over-winter in their chrysalis.
My questions:
1. Is there anything I can do to ensure they guys over-winter well? My concern is the ceramic pots will flood and freeze which isn't good for the chrysalis.
2. I was thinking about sticking old branches into the containers and hopefully the caterpillars will latch onto them above the container.
3. Will predators eat them if I don't protect them?
4. Should I move my ceramic containers to an isolated spot, e.g., the side of my house to protect them from the environment?
5. Should I move the containers right now to an area that is favorable for them to leave and make a chrysalis elsewhere? If so, what would be the ideal plants/area?

Sorry for so many questions, any advice would be helpful!!
Thanks!
