Does anyone know what this yellow flowered plant is?

Hi all,

This yellow-flowered plant popped up in my rose bed. I have a rule for unknowns -- let it grow to 3 feet tall, if it hasn't done anything interesting, pull it out. Well, this one was interesting, but I have no idea what it is. Anyone recognize it?

Not quite sure....maybe some kind of mullein (verbascum)? It is quite pretty whatever it is.

I'm 97% sure it is Oenothera biennis - evening primrose.

I don't have any idea what the plant is (tho I just checked a pic of yellow flowering currant, and I bet CeltyLass is right!) but I just wanted to say welcome to RMG to both of you, LillyBit and CeltyLass! Your Columbine is a lovely hybrid (or descendant of a hybrid.) It's not our native, Aquilegia canadensis, which is a nodding red and yellow flower. I've had hybrid and wild (native) Columbines in my gardens for years, and it's fun to see where new ones will pop up, and what new colors are produces every year. The native ones come true to color, and so far one of my Hybrids, 'Nora Barlow', a double form, reseeds true to color. Mine haven't become invasive, but the natives spread faster than the hybrids. You are lucky to have a purplish blue variety. After the flower is finished blooming, let the seed pods dry completely, then open them, or crush them between your fingertips, and scatter your seeds in an area where you'd welcome some new plants. Cool, the plant is a cross the street from me, I was clipping some of my plants to see if I could get them to root and I thought Ohh let me grab a clipping of this thing and see if it will take. The plant is on the outside of the neighbors fence, right next to the street and they have not been mowing that part of the yard so I hoped they they would not miss a clipping from such a big plant. Looking it up it looks like it might root.

Here in California, more likely Oenothera hookeri.

It has paler flowers than O. biennis.

Yes it is Oenothera hookeri. When I lived on the coast they lined the small roadsides. They are not too aggressive, but do begin to look ratty later in the season and will make the landscape look unkempt. They can easily be removed at that time. Al

Thanks all, I've looked it up and yes, it does look like the hookeri -- Hey! is this the same primrose that the Sycuan tribe uses as their "symbol" (that they had those gorgeous rugs in the US Grant Hotel woven to show?) I was actually thinking that the flower looked sort of like it, though the rugs don't have any yellow. I'm really glad I let this one go the full 3' of the "rule" because I really like it. At first I thought it was going to be some kind of foxglove, but this is really pretty too and it looks nice behind the roses in the shady spot.

My neighbor has a yellow flower that looks exactly like this. I don't know what it is, but could find out. They have spread around her front garden and she loves them. Hers smell really nice in the evening. Does yours?

javalita, Hmmm. I don't know what mine smell like in the evening--- Usually in the evening (around 8 - 9 pm) I'm out there with the scissors trying to snip the walking sticks in half -- in the dark, I'm usually trying to avoid being scourged by rose thorns, so haven't stuck my nose in it's direction. It's right behind a Double Delight and an Intrigue (not to mention the ancient pink rose that while I have no idea what it is has a knockout scent and the prettiest bud I've ever seen on a rose), it would have to be pretty powerful to catch my nose without serious attention.

I'm going out in an hour and I'll sniff a bit and let you know!

I knew it was Oenothera but wasn't sure of the species. I see these growing along the road cuts on the coast in SLO County.
