brug problem

I have several Brugs planted. This is my second year with Brugs. All plants are doing well except two, one is called Ed's white ?(name on tag) I have them all planted together. Ed's white has yellow leaves despite frequent water and fertilizer. The leaves mottled almost seem as though they are sunburnt. They are getting almost white and parched looking.

I have another one that is supposed to be red and these leaves are almost like leather and very green but somewhat crinkled and malformed, several y's and branches no buds . Could this be from too much fertilizer or sun? They get full sun plenty of water and fertilizer. All have y'ed several times but only two have buds. They are about 4 ft tall. Last year I had one that did great. Overwintered it in the garden (zone 6)under plenty of mulch and grass clippings Thought it was dead but it came back to life with gusto from the massive rootstock and is about 6 ft tall with plenty of buds ......What am I doing wrong?

The sun has been extremely brutal this year. Brugs do appreciate afternoon shade. I found out the hard way. For the second flush of blooms I bought a 50% shade cloth for my deck where I keep my brugs. Ended up using a camoflouge netting also that DH had around to block more afternoon sun. Mine were still getting sunburned!!

Make sure the brugs are not standing in water, their roots tend to rot. It's very common for the leaves to turn yellow and fall off. They regenerate very quicly, so as long as it's putting on new growth, don't be too concerned. If the new leaves are malformed, then that could indicate a virus.

As far as the deformed leaves that 'could' be a problem. Brugs are very susceptable to virus'. Normally in ideal growing conditions, they won't show symptoms. It could also be just sunburned leaves. Make sure your plants don't have any pests on them as those little sap suckers can do some damage like that.

Make sure your hands & tools are scrupulously clean when working from plant to plant. Virus' can spread to other plants in this manner. You can work on the same plant, but if you move to the next, wash your hands and tools.

Just keep watering and feeding them, if they don't bounce back, then I would segregate the sickly ones from the rest just in case it is a virus. A virus could spread to the rest of them and the only thing left is to destroy them.

Most of this info I read in the Brugmansia and Datura book I just purchased. If you're a serious brug enthusiast, I highly reccommend it. The book can be purchased on Amazon.com for less than the cost of a brug plant at the nursery. Good luck!

Hello olympia, Rudy, & cearbhaill. Hope y'all are doing well. olympia: My Brugs are in a pot for this year just to see what works & what doesn't in my climate before putting them in the ground. I have to worry about Nor'Easters in the winter, 65-plus mph winds, & a ft or more snowfalls. This yr back in March we had warmer than usual temps in the 60's & then suddenly there was a frost & it killed a lot of the plants. We get a lot of freezes then thaws then freezes again. Not good. I think next yr though I'm going to HAVE to plant my Brugs inground because their pot has become way too heavy for me to move without a hand cart. I use fish & seaweed on my Brugs & they seem to enjoy it. I have noticed after using it that the pests leave it alone (for awhile anyways). Do you have a favorite brand of seaweed emulsion? I've been using Neptune's Harvest. Have your Brugs recovered yet from repotting? Glad to hear yours "Y"ed! Looking forward to seeing pictures soon (if you can)! Rudy: Thank you for the clarification about Brugs! That explains why mine is so "happy" when it's cooler out. It's putting 4 blooms out now & a mess of new leaves but I guess the real show will come in the fall. Really looking forward to that! cearbhaill: How are you doing today? Thank you for the tip about using mulch in the pot! Mine's doing well right now with the exception of some leaf wilt when it gets over 85 degrees. You're in Eastern KY so I can imagine how HOT it's been for you & your plants :(. I hear ya about putting them in the ground though come spring - I'm watering mine almost every day & it drinks over a gal of water each time. Think it's thrips? Hmmmmmmmm. . . . . I'm going to hold off spraying anything or fertilizing. I've got some Sevin but at this point, I'm going to just "flush" the soil like some other people suggested. And keep them hosed down. I believe I would be compounding any problems I have and wouldn't be able to identify what is going on. The brown spots on the leaves I believe is the Ortho. (?) It was a very weak solution. The curling and puckering - I have no idea - thought it was not enough nutrients in the food (so tomato food), then broad mites, then cyclamen mites. . . .I haven't a clue. I've got hours and hours and hours into researching what is doing this. I keep stomping and squishing the earwigs on the ground. That's why I asked the forum for help and to have more experienced people examine the pics. Meantime - "put the sprayyyyyyyyyyyyys dowwwwwwwwwwwwn. . .step awayyyyyyyyyyy from the plants. . . . ." Wow, look at all the responses. I'm glad I found this site. You all are such nice people here. Lots of good advice and I am going to repot into a larger pot tomorrow. I have one location I would like to put it but don't know if it will like the sunny location. Think I am going to just place it over there in the larger pot for a few days and see how it reacts. If it doesn't wilt I will bury the pot there the following weekend. More Questions: If it is root bound, should I spread and break up the bottom roots like you do on other plants or leave fully intact? I always put gravel in the bottom of my containers to help with drainage and air circulation. Should I do that with this plant if I plan to bury the pot in the ground? Kat, I put a few empty 2 liter soda bottles on top of the soil around the plants (make sure the dirt is covered so they can't get to it). You can duct tape them together if the cats are persistent & shove them out of the pot. It works but the chicken wire might be more attractive. The foil gets holes poked in it or if you ball it up, they can mash it or push it aside just like the soda bottles. If they like real dirt boxes, you could make them one of their own & keep it next to the plants & hope they'll use it instead. Be sure to save some extra dirt in an empty garbage can or you might have them crossing all 4 legs in the dead of winter when the ground is too frozen to dig. Linda
