You are in the right area for them to grow naturally outside. That sounds perfect what you said, and I would put a few drainage holes. I would love to have an outdoor bog. I am in Mississippi, so I could do so if it weren't for my dogs. They tore up all but two of my outdoor plants, so now I have to make do with them in hanging baskets outside.

You have the right idea as far as a bog and the proper mix, I put drainage about 6" from the top and over-fill the container. I also put a layer of inert material (aka packing peanuts) at the bottom.

I just found out that there is a type of sarracenia growing in the woods around my house. There is a national forest all around us. My husband went to the park ranger office to get a permit for a horse trail ride we are having soon, and they have pictures on the walls of plants and things that they have growing in the woods. One of them was a "pitcher plant". He didn't know enough to be able to id it for me, but he said it was all green, so I'm thinking something like a pale trumpet. I will be keeping my eyes open for it when I go walking in the woods.

Something that makes a really gr8 bog is one of those black
plastic tubs used for mixing concrete.
They are real heavy duty.It is about 2 1/2 ' wide by 3' long X 8" deep.
I drill 4, 2"(with a special round bit for making door knob holes)drainage holes in it about halfway down the side of the tub. Then I stuff these holes with long fibered shpagnum moss.
I use peat and perlite( wet sand is much heavier) 50/ 50 as my media.This can be easily moved by 2 strong women, Or one strong man.
I don't fill it all the way to the top because I overhead
water.
I have never buried one because I fear an earthworm invasion, which will make the media too rich for the carnivorous plants to live.
