I am from San Francisco, but San Francisco rose society has a list of roses, that are suggested. I did a bad thing, and planted without using the list. I only have one rose on the list and the rest of the roses have balling problems. That means the rose won't open due to being in a coastal conditions. So found this list of suggestions from Orange County rose society webpage. But, I think any rose that can grow in San Francisco without balling, would be a good rose for you to grow and there is a more listed on the San Francisco rose society webpage, but I can't not say if your roses are good roses. I can only give general help. I am not a rose expert. So you may want to check out those pages if you have not done so already or go to a meeting and ask other people what they grow. You sound like you are very serious about roses.

"Surprisingly, there are many roses that can be grown in the coastal region. Orange County Rose Society member, Stu Span, has written a book on growing in this challenging microclimate, Easy to Grow Roses. If you live within 10 miles of the beach, you "are along the coast." A good rule of thumb is to stick with roses of 25 petals or less as well as having an excellent disease resistance. The newer roses being released emphasize disease resistance as this is the number one deterrent to growing roses.

Have you posted over in the Rose Forum? We have a number of rose experts from CA that regularly post there, including hoovb, angelcub, and jerijen. They can tell you all about your growing conditions for roses.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is silvery pink, though- not yellow.
It's wonderful. I grow St. Patrick, which is good for hot inland valleys, but I don't know how it does at the beach.

I stand corrected; I have grown Our Lady when it went by another name knew better.

I was a rosarian years ago, but had no where to plant. I planted April in Paris tonight; had a ball ruining my manicure (chuckle).

I hope that St Patrick doesn't want to live in the inland empire; after 40 in Phoenix, I am happy to be here.

I am familiar with some of the roses that you mentioned and know that they do well in SoCal. I have Our Lady and she does very nicely in my garden about a mile from the coast; and there is a St Patrick nearby that blooms a pure yellow.

My suggestion is to contact your local Rose Society for advice...to me it seems a little late in the year for rose planting so I would see what the *experts* tell you. Perhaps they have a Consulting Rosarian who would be willing to come to your home, especially since you have several roses to plant. Otherwise, the suggestion to visit the Roses forum is a good bet.

I thank you all for your comments; I have found it difficult to meet people in California, but you made me feel right at home. I am glad to hear confirmation on St. Patrick, Our Lady,and Gemini. Gemini is a cast iron plant, isn't it?!

I have a funny story to tell. I planted Fourth of bloody July the year it came out. It was the sickest bareroot I ever saw, but I pinned the three sickly canes as far out as I could laterally, and said a prayer. By a month out, the plant was as tall as me. By Fourth of July, it was 12 feet tall. By the end of the year, it was impeding on Olympiad to the left and Double Delight to the right. It had to come down.

I regularly pruned bougainvilleas, and I have the whole gauntlet/ beekeeper suit thing. I rarely curse, but the neighbors, who regularly stuck their heads over the fence, because I would always clip a rose for them if I was gardening and had my clippers. They thought I was being attacked from the shouting, and I drew a crowd.

Because Fourth of July fights back! I won the battle (chuckle) but needed a pint transfusion by the end. Fourth of July is a monster in Phoenix.

The comments about roses with fewer petals is probably good advice for the cool [40 years in AZ, you STILL remember cool, don't you?]coastal climes.

May I also suggest that you hold those roses in containers or in a temp holding bed 'till you've got the lay of your personal micro climate?

And 'plant people' are generally the nicest people around. Ma Nature keeps us humble and in awe. BTW .. your FOURTH OF JULY story is a hoot. Better you than me!

I saw St. Patrick in Sacramento. It is so cute. It is yellow, but supposted to be green right? The sacramento rose society had one. I would try it, but I don't think it would like San Francisco conditions, and I am out of space unless a rose dies.

Borderbarb, love the poetry. I gotta say, though, my garden inspires a different kind of language from me...

Tropicalthought- I love St. Pat- it's a lovely clear yellow with green outer petals and sometimes a slightly apricot-colored center. It lasts forever- both on the plant and as a cut flower. It also has nice dark green foliage. And it doesn't take a pound of flesh to prune like Fourth of July, another heat-loving rose.

Hi Beth! Huntington Beach is a beautiful city, I was born and raised there, graduated from HBHS! I now live down the coast a ways, in N. San Diego County. If they're on Fort Your enemy out here is any rose that can't handle the moister sea air and is susceptible to fungal diseases - mildew, rust, black spot. So, pick roses that are more resistant and you'll thank yourself. Also, the rose societies out here are VERY active, so if you're a rose lover, think about joining. The San Diego Rose Society has Bob and Dona Martin, who you may know as huge Rose Society folks from Arizona! As to your roses you nabbed from J&P:

Our Lady of Guadalupe: Will do well, very disease resistent and good choice for the beach
Nancy Reagan: Haven't grown it, just know it smells heavenly.
Beauty Within: Another I'm not familiar with
Tahitian Sunset: The BOMB here in S. Calif. Big blooms, very fragrant, very disease resistant
Gemini: Always in my garden because it makes an excellent cut rose. A standard here in S. California and a deserving AARS winner. Very fragrant.
Angel Face: This is a personal favorite of mine. Looks delicate but is a very hardy little rose. I have grown this rose since I started growing roses in my garden. I just love how this rose smells. I think it is on my top 10 favorite rose fragrance lists!
April in Paris (Ht pink blend),
Disneyland: Popular out here for obvious reasons (and yes, it's planted all over Disneyland). Lots of blooms, does very well. Give it LOTS of light and heat, and it will turn all sorts of lovely colors of orange and apricot.
Aromatherapy: Absolutely perfect color pink rose with an intoxicating smell. Big, upright, and heavy bloom producer.
Love: Have not grown this one
Lagerfeld: Gorgeous fragrance. I think in our area, though, you'll see balling and brown edges due to thrips and/or botrytis
Olympiad: I don't grow a lot of reds, but this is a solid choice, AARS winner, an older rose so you'll see "nekked legs" but lovely clear red flowers.
Saint Patricks: Great rose, AARS winner, very disease resistant, heavy bloomer, and will be greener the hotter the weather is out here (probably the same for you in AZ)

If you're thinking of adding to your collection, be sure to check out Hot Cocoa, a very cool rose, unusually colored, Julia Child, 4th of July, Scentimental, Cinco de Mayo and I grow Glamis Castle (David Austin) in my area (6 miles from the ocean) like nobody's business.

Oops, I forgot to finish a sentence! Beth, if any of your roses are on Fortuniana root stock, you're very fortunate. Even though we're not Arizona, we're still in drough conditions, and your roses will do very well on that stock out here.

Jeepers! Just read your second note about your 4th of July rose, HAH!!!! Mine are tied to my fence (I have 4 of them), and yes, they are wicked thorned, but I love how much they bloom and how crazy pretty they are! I have them intermingled on one side with a bougainvillea so I dread having to prune over there. I'm going to break down this year and buy major rose gloves that go up to my elbows.

Beth, the reason I thought it was late for planting is because with the heat and hours of sun at this time of year the roses may put more energy into foliage and blooms than into developing the root system. I took that question to someone at my rose society last night, and while he conceded that this was of concern, he thought that your roses should transplant fine if you make sure to add a lot of organic material to the planting bed so the roots have an easier time of it, and give plenty of water. So, I stand corrected! He also suggested contacting/joining the Orange County Rose Society.

Welcome to California, Beth. It sounds as tho' you need to treat 4th of July like a cactus and use long tongs to handle. (Now, you know, I'm just going to have to get one out of pure curiousity.) LOL
