If I was you I would leave it on awhile. I don't think it will hurt the plant anymore than say any other regular stalk. Could you post a photo? I do know where you can ask about this. There is a cool forum gallery I stumbled upon the other day It is a variegated mutation type forum, you can prob get some good advice there , also on the 'plant propagation forum' here at garden web some people seem to know alot about mutants and such. My variegated brug started growing a white leaf branch early this Spring from one spot where I had trimmed it back last fall. It has only grown about 6" since then, where other new branches by it have grown 2+ feet.

I do not think it hurts it at all, I'm just seeing what it does.

Since it is not green, I do not think it can produce enough chlorophyl to sustain much growth.

Since it's all white, it has no cholorophyll and can't produce food. If you cut if away from the mother plant, it will die.

This is called a 'Sport' and is not likely to survive on it;s own as Judith mentioned, if seperated from the nourishment it is receiving from the mother plant. No cholorphyl means it can not produce it's own food in most cases.

Start feeding it with blue food coloring in the water!

That'll freak some folks out....

You know...I've thought about feeding one of my white brugs concentrated blue food dye to get blue flowers.

I think it is really funny that you think I am joking about the blue dye. I have been thinking about do this for a year...since I put some cut daisies and a large white Calla lily in blue dye. The Calla lily turned out extremely cool, it got thousands of little blue dots all over it, but the veins did not turn blue, really unique. I had to use a lot of blue to get a reaction for the Calla.

But I decided not to do it to one of my big brug plants. I'll have to get a 3 footer to try it with. I just need to find were I can buy large container of concentrated blue food dye?

Yeah I knew about people using food coloring for 'cut' flowers (like carnations is common I think) but hadn't heard about using it on rooted plants. Be awesome if it works. Think of all the knocks you would get on your door then ;P

Yes, that is what got me interested in thinking about trying dye with a growing flowering plant.

Speaking of using dye on growing, blooming plants...a fried who wanted blue hydrangeas for daughter's wedding asked if she could dye my pick one. She poured 2 bottles of regular old Blueing at the base of four bushes, (folks used it in laundering white clothes year ago) and man, were those blossoms Blue!

Update...the all white branch on my variegated brug is now about 12" tall and has 'Y'd. It now has 3 1" long flowers on it. It will be interesting if it flowers.

Currently, all of the regular growth has cover it so it is growing inside the plant in shade. That plant is 6 feet tall and as wide.

Gee, Wildcat, can you provide us with pics once it's blooming? I'd love to see them. Ah, that's so sweet, the plant is protecting the little sport! I think I've read something on this forum a couple years ago about "albino brug growths".... Thanks for sharing this saga with us Wildcat, keep us updated.

grittymits..you just gave me a "lightbulb" moment. I am going to dose some of my white daffodils! Will let you know how it turns out. I will tell everyone they have a "fungus" so they will not help themselves to them!! Great idea..

You might also try Pom Juice, along side of your Red Wine, can almost tell you how it helped my husband get so ..so very much better, with his heart problem..Spike loves to delete my advice so will not expand on that..but try it..
My brugs started out with a real splash this year..they have had any and every thing you can name. Still thinking they will greet me at the "Pearly Gates"!!
Stay well and drink that red wine, Pom juice, blueberry, and all those wonderful things that will keep us..keeping on!! Keep those Brugs growing, that is also very important.

Here are a couple pictures of my variegated sport that is white. Remember that it is very whitish, not as yellow green as my dismal digital camera shows...LOL! I just took these pix. You can see a couple of the flower buds on it. The plant that it is on is currently a good 6 feet tall and 5 feet in diameter, and full of buds. It had a small flush a few days ago of two dozen flowers...not worth taking a picture of.

I remember many years ago, that my father would mix up laundry bluing in a huge wash tub and pour it under the snowball bush while it was in bloom...we thought it was so cool! He used to do the same sometimes with daffodils. Never seemed to hurt 'em at all, and it fascinated us kids. When you live out in the country, you have to find ways to amuse yourselves.... ;)

The white stalk has flowered!

All 6 flowers colored just like the ones on the rest of the plant.

Comeout kind of a yellow, open to white, then slowly color to apricot/peach.

RA is right on this one, these are sports and if removed they will collapse and die. It's the green stalked ones that will make it.
