Help! PVS Question

I've been raising Pipevine Swallowtail cats (this year is the first time I've had them), about 60 of them in some storage containers. They've all been doing fine and are getting pretty large, like about 2" long. Just now I opened up the one container to look in on them and immediately saw a black pool of liquid in the bottom on the newspaper. A large cat is on a leaf above that spot with liquid dripping out of its behind. I can't imagine what would have happened to it. They don't have black poop right before they pupate, do they? I'm hoping them do. Otherwise, I don't know what to think. If it's sick, I hope the other ones don't get sick. I'll remove it from the container.
