Do Vft's need dormancy

I bought a VFT in early december and im growing it in a terrarium. I was wondering if it will still need dormancy this late in the year and what will happen if it doesnt go dormant.

This late in the season I really wouldn't worry about it. It's possible that it alread started domancy depending on where you got it but if it's growing new leaves (traps) then that's unlikely.

Plan on domancy next autumn/winter but this year, just enjoy the plant.

Other little tips you may find helpfull... Make sure you're giving it distilled or rain water. (RO water will work too but if you don't know what RO means then don't worry about it) Keep it in some kind of water tray and keep about an inch or so of the forementioned water in it. IF it starts to grow a flower stalk, feel free to cut it off at about an inch or two height, making a flower stalk can really tire out the plant.

The photoperiod is now increasing, signalling the time of new growth. I would skip dormancy now.

Hmmm.. i would move the plants rather to a somewhat 'shade' location during the winter. they can also benefit from 3 hours of morning sun in their dormancy period. Just make sure to keep their soil moist, but not soaking wet. also, if you have really cold winters, they can be tough little plants below cold temps. during this time, they will lose their leaves and stop their growth. They will look smaller in size. once they go through their dormancy, they will grow back again in the next spring. leave them in their pots, just move them to a different location during the winter or leave them outside. vfts dislike being disturbed during winter time. whatever you do. avoid repotting at this time, you may repot them before they wake up.

Well, when I took them inside, I gave them the water treatment that they needed. I think the problem was that I left the plants dormant outside and this year it rained a lot so they were wet during a part of their dormancy which may have weaken them. I should have taken them in right after they showed signs of dormancy. The problem was that I thought I could get away with it since many of them go dormant outside and still make it. But this year I ended up with a lot more plan than last year and my house on the inside is full of dormant plants. A good thing is, the survivors of outside dormancy are going to be stronger plants, most of them are seed plants so the ones that make it are the strongest. The Red Purples (Big Mouth) are a very good strong plant. They all survive dormacy outside even in the pooring rain.

Sounds good to me. The mulching is a good idea to keep them from drying out. Pots make horrible insulation and dry wind can freeze dry the plants. In their natural bogs they are surrounded by other small plants, so would have some insulation in numbers and by being in the ground itself. The bucket with the pine needles sounds great.

Just another voice suggesting to cut the flowers! Your approach to work with providing dormancy is a decent one. What I do is keep mine in the unheated, cold attic for ~4-5 months, right at a window. I let the natural decline and rise of photoperiod, along with the corresponding temps to keep it in dormancy and then provide the cues to awaken them. And when danger of frost passes, I take them outside, for maximum sun and growth. I live in the Buffalo, NY area, so keeping them oustide, year round, without mulching, is probably a death sentence! But you have the elements correct - reduced light, temps, and water. Do you have artificial lighting at all?

Thanks, thats what i thought, and I got it at a nursery along with 2 other vft's and some sundews for free because they were dieing. Only 1 Vft survived but all the sundews lived.

Next year let it go dormant and put in a cool (say 40 degree F. spot) until Valentines day. Mine are in the fridge currently.
