It WAS a Monarch!

Yesterday, I told DH, "I saw a Monarch!" but, then, I thought, ...maybe it was that Queen I released. I swore, it looked like a Monarch but I wasn't all that close and I needed to change to new contact lenses. I saw the butterfly again today while I was eating my lunch. I tried to get closer for ID purposes but just couldn't so I gave up and commenced to eat my lunch. The next think you know, this butterfly was ovipositing on my Milkweed (I caught it out of the corner of my eye) and I also saw the wings spread out and WOOOO-HOO! Positive ID! Yep, female Monarch, for sure. :) So far, I've collected 32 eggs AND one 1st instar ! I cannot believe it. Truly.

Now, more than even, I just HAVE to see if I can get this Monarch site finished. I tell you, if I wasn't so darned Type A it would be done.

Yay! The Monarchs are beginning their fall invasion. Congrats on your eggs. Now will you share these in your classroom this year? Let's see, 32 eggs and 1 first instar caterpillar equal . . .

Congrats on your eggs!

Coincidentally, I saw the FIRST Monarch of the year in the gardens today! This is very exciting, and lifts my spirits. And it was a SHE - hopefully she will leave some eggs on the Asclepias somewhere. :)

I'm seeing Monarchs just about everywhere, from my garden, on my way to the store, on my way to work, fluttering just about everywhere. Granted, it's only one here and there, but still great to see them around. I had quite a few yesterday; 3 on one butterfly blush and I saw 2 on the other side of the yard. I didn't see 5 at the same time and they could have gotten over to the other side quickly, as they normally do. Even my neighbor, who is nature challenged, just asked how butterflies mate. I found this strange, but then realized he saw the back to back flying. He was pretty amazed, and I was thrilled. I currently have my first 6 chrysalids of the year, 3 of which should eclose today (I can't wait to get home!) and the others should follow, and 8 cats in just about all instars. This is a personal record for me, I think the highest count I've had was 12 released in one season, and I'm already at 14, unofficially. With all this mating going on, I could've had so many more, but unfortunately, I'll be going on vacation soon, so any new cats will have to fend for themselves, which is never good. Hopefully they'll be no more casualties, only having 1 monarch issue to date. It didn't eat for 5 days and was euthanized...

I don't know about that but I picked up 6 wild cats and fed them in a plastic pretzel jug. one died, the rest went into chrysalis. 2 have emerged. one fell apart, one is very dark but looks like it may have died. The last one is looking real good so far. The only problem is that the ones that emaerged decided to do so while we were sleeping and my 4 year old missed it. Am hoping she can watch the next one emerge. She loves helping to care for and releasing her 'babies' . I wish I could put a picture of the enclosure I made. I got two 12-18 inch rings and two smaller rings. Using white netting (soft) from the fabric store I stitched around the big rings with them about 3 feet apart. I overlapped one hte side to keep them from escaping. I stitched the smaller rings 6 inches above the top ring and below the obottome ring. Gathered the ends and tied them and have it hanging in my office. When the butterflies emerged they woudl not go to the sugarwater so I picked a few flowers outside and stuck them in a jar. By placing the dogs dish inthe botom I had a nice place for the jar.

Personal excitement here in Central Massachusetts -- saw my first-in-a-long-time Monarch two days ago, flitting among my flowers!! Can't remember the last time I saw one here -- it's been at least 10 years. Also have tiger and black swallowtails this year, altho certainly not in the numbers of long ago. Even the early small blue butterflies are not as numerous lately. That's very depressing.

How strange! I saw my first monarch too this weekend and I'm way down in Dallas. I couldn't believe it since they don't usually come back through until October. Unfortunately mine was a male so no eggs just yet. It was still a sight to see!

How unusual that so many of us are seeing Monarchs! Actually, this is the 2nd Monarch this summer to come through my gardens and is the second FEMALE no less! The first didn't leave anything but I am thrilled that this one is leaving some babies for me.

I don't know if I've mentioned this here or not but I have left Kindergarten. I am back teaching mathematics at the middle school as of the end of this month. I WILL, however, be taking my butterflies with me. Absolutely. I know that there will be a number of students who were at my former elementary school AND a number who were in my Kindergarten class who will probably be my students once again. PLUS, there's a garden club at my school (I used to teach here 20 years ago) as I've given the garden club teacher Milkweed seeds and he has lots of Milkweed growing. I've also given Monarchs during a butterfly presentation in the past so it is a foregone conclusion that bringing my 'babies' will be a welcome addition. :)

I am so excited about having Monarchs and look forward to raising a bunch of 'em alongside the Giant Swallowtails (Heraclides cresphontes) I currently have as well as the Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) and Cabbage White (Pieris rapae) and...yep, it's been a busy summer and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Well, you're all set if your curriculum calls for calculations of mean, median, and mode: you can do daily average lengths on a small set of caterpillars.

You could do linear trends, too, if you have a pre-algebra class.

Yep, pre-algebra it is, Jeff. I just found out I've got three pre-algebra classes. :) Woo-hoo! Three classes will be 6th grade as well so I will have a nice mix and should have some of my former kids in all of my classes. I am SO looking forward to focusing on math only. I will miss the little guys (but won't miss the 'accidents' of pee and poo) and the singing and story telling and all the fab science...oh well. Ya gotta give up something when you move on to middle school. The horrid stress I had with this gal I worked with was just eight years of too much for me (not worth the high blood pressure any longer and I don't have much longer before I can retire and I want to retire in peace). :) I do so love that middle school age child just as much as I love Kindergarten-age children so I look forward to this group. Let's see what I do with 'em with regards to the ol' butts! tee-hee!

(although hubby isn't sure whether or not I should take my Hissing Cockroaches to school)

The Monarchs showed up here today! I was so excited when we pulled into the driveway that I practically jumped out of the moving car (DH was driving). I grabbed my camera and started stalking them. Two today. They were finding the milkweed and loved the marigolds and cosmos for nectar.
