Suggestions On How To Get Rid Of A Thirteen Lined Ground Squirell
Comments (8)We have a regular group of squirrels that frequent our yard. Not a huge amount, maybe 5-6 of them. We seem to be tolerating them at the moment. We feed birds and they are under the feeders getting the scraps and I don't mind that. We have two squirrel proof feeders and baffles so they aren't bothering the feeders much. We also have a large tube feeder that we put safflower seed in which is their least favorite food and 90% of the time, they avoid it. They have dug up bulbs and eaten them, and it was suggested to me to lay hardware cloth or wire mesh over the ground when I plant them and we did that. We cut pieces to size of the area where the bulbs were and it seems to me that they only bother the bulbs, the first year we plant them. It was suggested that they are attracted by disturbed soil. I only use crocus and daffodils, which I don't think they like that much, although they did eat crocus bulbs one fall. I only have a couple of lilies but they don't seem to bother those. I heard tulips are a favorite of theirs and for that and other reasons, I don't grow them. The other thing they did was to eat and run off with iris tubers that I just bought and planted in pots and put them in the shade for a few days. They also love to chew on succulent leaves, but only on those I have had in the house in pots for some reason. They never bother the hens and chicks, planted in the ground. So I don't bring my houseplants out for the summer now. I'm considering buying cactus in pots to surround an area of succulents I'd like to put outside in the summer. (g) I wouldn't consider trapping them. Nowhere to bring them to and they would just be replaced by new ones. You just have to find a way to live with them. :-)...See MoreNeed fly ID and suggestions on how to get rid of them
Comments (2)Thank you. We have had a bug zapper out there for a few days, but they seem to avoid it during the day, and go somewhere else at night when the light is on. I suspect is is the neighbors horses that are attracting them- their stall is only about 500 feet away. I can't change that, but I wish those little critters would respect property lines!...See MoreCan anyone tell me what these are and how to get rid of them?
Comments (3)Please do not use dish soap as an insecticide for any plant. Detergents Dishsoap/ detergent’s effect on plants varies with the mode of exposure. Dawn, Palmolive, Joy, ...... dishsoap, as examples, are each and all a mishmash of chemicals, at least eleven of which are phytotoxic. If the top of the plant is sprayed thoroughly with even mild detergent solutions such that all surfaces including leaves are covered, the detergent can easily dissolve the protective coating of cuticular wax on the leaves of the plant, causing abnormally high rates of water loss and possible necrosis of all or part of the leaf. Cuticular waxes prevent leaves from drying out, and help stop pathogens from attacking the leaf. Strong solutions will even dissolve cell membranes, causing death of the cells. If a detergent solution is used as a soil drench or makes its way into the soil as a consequence of over-spray or run-off, the effect on roots is immediate. Because one of the main function of roots is to absorb water and nutrients dissolved in water, they lack the waxy protective coating that leaves employ. Detergent solution in contact with root cells can quickly dissolve the lipid membrane surrounding cells, killing the cells and inhibiting water/ nutrient uptake. Hair cells growing as appendages off larger roots do the lion’s share of assimilating water and nutrients, and these very delicate cells would be the first casualty of any detergent in the root zone. There are widely available insecticidal soaps, designed to be used topically and made mixing potassium with only long chain fatty acids, carefully selected and specifically formulated to be safe for mammals & birds, death on most insects they contact, and most important, safe for plants. If you need something "soapy", it would be much better if you selected a product intended for use on plants than one intended for other purposes. Comments (5)nice pix of the bugs .. can we see the plant??? interior yellowing.. and then browning of interior needles is cyclical .. annual .. and can be increased by transplanting ... you said you just bought it.. did you just plant it??? it might also help to include big city name location ... how you planted it.. how you have watered it since.. and the pic we have to ID the bugs ... which i am sure someone will chime in .... and then decide if they are actually causing the harm you note.. before we go trying to eradicate them ... but i doubt bugs are causing interior yellowing ... ken...See MoreMoon Rabbit
