OT:Look at the Canna I grew from seed from Siam

When I saw this Canna in full bloom this morning I KNEW it was one that I had grown from seeds. Luckily for my tags lol, I know it is from you Siam.

Man it looks just like the Canna Picasso. You said you don't have it, right? Or am I confused with what you have? Please don't blame me. You just got WAY to many for me to remember lol

THANKS AGAIN Siam. The sad thing is that only 4 grew out. And you had shared so many!!

I have recently gotten canna picasso, which does not grow true from seeeds.
This canna definitely looks like a hybrid from canna golden girl.
I must say it is bright an nice but, it doesnt have anything different or new about it. I wouldn't keep this one because it doesnt have anything extraordinary about it. However if you like it you should totally keep it and grow it.

Lucy i will have to send you more canna hybrid seeds, from some of my more recent hybrids with stripped petals and coloured foliage, and hope that you get some really special ones!

Please show me what else come oout from the 3 other seedlings.

Siam are you kidding...as just a canna lover not a hyberdizer...I LOVE THIS ONE!!!! It sure is special to ME!

I do hope that one day I have a special special one which I will be able to share with you!!!

lmao Karyn, I know alot of people hate it cuz it's invasive, but I told DH he could have the back of the yard for his crap, and I really want something hardy and full that will climb high to be at the back of beds to block his crap..an old van he uses as storage..crap! his junk he brings home he thinks he may someday have a need for..crap!! And I need something to cover the shed in the back, I usually use morning glories and moon flowers, but was thinking of using the trumpet vine this year. I don't want ivy cuz I hate how bees n wasps make their homes in it. Aw, poor mystery snails. went to heaven with my poor lil plecos. Yeah those stupid koi are survivors, lol. Mine are getting stupid too. They hide all the time now. I think it has something to do with something trying to get them. The other day mine were coming up to the top right in front of me when I was feeding them. Now they keep hiding. Do you have your calla in the ground? Maybe I should put mine in the ground when they are done blooming. Well, I went out weeding, and found another one of those lil babies..I pulled it. Wasn't a runner, had a tiny lil root system. Watch it be something I threw down seeds for in the fall, lol. But I did leave the other one so we'll see what it is, and if anyone has any guesses and proves to be right..well then..they'll be right, lol. Sorry no prizes :) I have so much coming up, and threw down so many seeds, I'm scared to pull anything.

The best method I've found so far is to go to the bench grinder and just hold them between your fingers and buzz against the stone for a second. It gets through the shell in a flash and you don't have to file your finger tips off with a file. I get through about 100-150 in ten minutes that way. Then I soak them in water for a day or three and stick them in starting soil. I'm getting about 90-95% starts. If you use the peat pellet starters the roots will stick out the bottom within days of germination and you'll be potting them up within the second week. I'm currently starting about 3,000 seeds and expect flowers just before frost, or more likely next season.

Hi Ladyrose65, I tried to start perhaps 20 seeds in March and 15 of them germinated. I grew them under lights and put them outside in pots around mid May. They were already about 15 inches tall. The bed that I wanted to prepare for them never got finished, so I put the pots in the area and the roots grew out of the drain holes and into the ground. They are Huge!!!! Each pot has 4 to 6 stalks, so I probably have about 100 full sized plants. I got a lot of flowers and there are buds still coming up from the latest stalks. I am thinking I have the flowers due to the fact that I started them early indoors and that they are in FULL sun. Never a shadow is cast on them. Canna2grow, Kent, was correct in his reply to me above. Only a few were as nice as the plants that I took the seeds from. Most of the flowers were not as full and color not as deep a red as the parents. I wonder if the fullness of the flowers would have been better if the plants were in the ground without the pots. I would like to get nice looking plants, but I am afraid of getting one with a virus. One thing I am sure of, I am going to have a hard time getting the rhyzomes out of the pots. Ken

Wow, that's beautiful! I's be so thrilled to get something like that from seed! I have grown cannas from seed for years and while I have gotten some red leaves and various flower colours, I have yet to get any stripe or variegation in the leaves. Is it common to get the stripes if using seed from a striped variety or do they usually revert to solid?

With all the beautiful canna pix I've seen here (then making the mistake of searching a little) I'm afraid I feel another obsession coming on. You may just have a line waiting as yours multiplies Lucy.
My few canna's foliage is great but it has been so much cooler than normal we haven't seen any blooms yet...OTOH it gives me another thing to 'look forward to' just like my shy brugs.

Well I've never grown cannas, but that photo makes me want to! And the way you presented it is like a greeting card cover - very artistic!
