yellowing brugmansia

I have several brugmansias in pots. Among them, Jamaican yellow, charles grimaldi (sp?), and ecuadorian pink. They all grow to around 4 ft tall over the summer. then put into a garage over winter where they die back some over the winter.

My issue is that they all never look lush and green. The leaves on the lower stems are more yellow. They always have several flushes of bloom and grow well. Just always losing yellow leaves. Is this normal? It sounds like nitrogen def. but I fertilize with Miracle grow every 2 weeks or so. I have also added Iron to the soil. None has made any difference. They are planted in Miracle Gro Potting soil. The ones in full sun seem to be worse at this than ones that get some afternoon shade.

It is normal for the older bottom leaves to die and fall of as new ones grow but if the plant is overall not very green you can add one tablespoon of epsoms salt per gallon of water and it will help them green up.

drtoddh, First of all I would tell you not to use MG Potting soil. Second if it's just the yellowing of the leaves remove them. I would tell you to remove the brugs from all the soil, pull them out of the pots and try to spray them to remove the soil. Get some Earthgro from Home Depo which we recommend and repot them all. B. versicolor Ecaudor Pink will take the most sun or the three. B. Charles Grimaldi will take a little more sun than B. Jamaica Yellow by about a half hour. So morning sun is okay but mainly shade. I would also fertilize on a weekly bases with a monthly dose of Epson Salts, that would be one table spoon per 1 gallon of water. I tell all newbies, to feed their Brugmansia on Sunday after they attend church which is easy to remember for most. Yellowing leaves are signs of several things and should be removed according to karma! ; ) Give us a shout if you need more directions and Brugs!

Sandra brug seeds, except for a couple varieties, don't grow true to color. If you want a yellow flowered variety you should start with a cutting. You'll get flowers much faster with a cutting as well.

Thank's for the names. When I moved the tags got lost. I knew one was Dr. Seuss. The one in the back yard may have a tad darker color, if that would help to ID them. This is the first year they have bloomed. I am really enjoying them. They neighbors tell me they are also enjoying them. Again, thanks a million. You always come to mind when I walk by them. Do you still sit at the window with your laptop? Today, Diane told me the little one by the patio has it's first buds. Now if a freeze will wait a few more weeks. Happy Thanksgiving.

Seems like you are fertizizing well...

How long have the plants been in the same potting soil? How big are the pots? do you water fight after the soil dries out completely and fully saturate it?

~~>The Ph of the potted mix could be too acid, locking up specific nutrients. The soil might be "tired"
~~>not big enough pot is possible too.
