You can also try Exotica Nursery in Vista. I think they're only open on Saturdays, now. Scionwood refers to a dormant branch of a particular fruit tree cultivar. It is used in reference to grafting fruit trees. Many different fruit trees are actually grafted. The cultivar you're purchasing is actually scion wood from a mother tree, grafted onto hardier rootstock. Other plants are grown on their own roots, but many are not in order to get best of both worlds - the variety you want on the top from the scion wood, grafted to root stock that will survive better in your particular soil conditions. Yes, learning how to graft is on the top of to do list. I am only interested in non-astringent D. Kaki. I have not come across the ones that have seeds. I eat store-bought persimmons. They are pretty much seedless. A few more questions: if I plant persimmon seeds to start trees that I can graft on to, those seeds need to be from a rather cold hardy varieties, right? Say if I have an astringent variety for a tree, can I graft non-astringent scions to them? Are they compatible? If these questions may sound dumb, now you know that I don't know much about persimmon!!

Definately go to Ver De Ber, also, Cheap Sams off the LIE by exit62 I think...N side of LIE.Peconic doesn't really deal much in trees.Birches get a borer so do a little research as to the disease resistant varieties.There are several nurseries around Rt 135 near the LIE. I do not know any names, and they may be wholesale only....in case you know a landscaper....and if you do, you can get trees at Bissets.

I have lots of "Li" root sprouts. Mara, you know my 'soil'. My trees are planted in the utility easement behind my house and get no supplemental water. They always look green and healthy, and they bloom, but I seldom get much fruit. I figure it's because the critters around here get to it first. The fresh fruit tastes like dry apples. Never tried drying them.
