OT: Am I in California?

We had an earthquake this morning around 5 am! It only lasted a couple seconds and I didn't know what it was at the time. My older son had a couple friends spending the night and they were up all night making noise. I thought they were body slamming each other and knocking into the wall but realized that wouldn't have made the house shake. It felt like a lightning strike closeby but it wasn't storming. Then I thought that maybe it had something to do with road construction that was going on a short distance away, maybe they were using dynamite or something? I couldn't figure it out. I didn't find out it was an earthquake until I was watching the 6 am news. No damage just some things rearranged on shelves.

Karyn, let's hope this was a once in a very, very long time earthquake. Looked up that it was 3.6.

Susan those are beautiful! How great to share that love with so many of my friends! good morning Pat lol Karyn I am not sure...let me count them. I had bought a few at the last Co-Op Ryan co hosted at Dave's. ha ha ha so is DH bringing them home with a tractor trailer? lol My heart almost broke when I saw that the sticks to hold the stems...were poked right into the bulb from you :-( But I am not sure if you saw it...it had a BABY bulb and it is growing !!! :-) Lucy

Thanks everyone and I do think my garden should look even nicer during next springs bulb season what with my new will be additions. AS far as planting goes, that is why I plot my new bulb additions now in the spring and order early. If I actually waited till Fall, I wouldn't get them as I think about the work of planting them too much. Getting them now forces me to deal with the planting when they arrive in the fall. I forgot to say when I wrote this post that The Becks order was a good deal because they have $25.00 off is you order more than $50.00 which I did. So I think I got a bargain! And I am still very excited about those Firespray tulips. was thinking lots about them last night.

Talk to some good architects about ideas on how to transform this to more-residential use (common in cities BTW - all sorts of former factories are now trendy lofts), and if you're not completely smitten with it now, consider waiting to see if the asking price falls further (or better yet, just put in a lowball bid). If real-estate agents and HGTV are to be believed, lots of people can't look beyond clutter and oddly-colored paint, much less how to turn a big garage into a house, so you may be able to score a great deal on a good property and/or location. Without seeing the inside or floorplan, much less the infrastructure (will you need to dig up concrete to install plumbing, electric, and ductwork?), it's hard to know what this renovation would cost. I'm inclined to keep one of the garage doors and use it as a garage, and perhaps make a bay window or separate vertical windows, or just siding/brick/stone, on the other and put a room behind it. Real estate is still wildly overpriced by every traditional metric in many markets though - it seems a near-certainty another wave of coming foreclosures will drive prices down further until they're at near-2000 prices, so I'm reluctant to buy at all yet unless the price looks seriously appealing.

Well hi, Jenn Codename: Danger! Didn't know we had anyone else from Nebraska posting on Rose Forum these days! Maybe I've been lucky to be planting in the warm spots in my yard, but I've found that even these temperatures in the 20's hasn't refrozen the ground (yet). Supposedly we're going to crawl out of the 30's by tomorrow but I'll believe it when I see it, as the forecast today said 40's and it's not even close (brrrr). If you ever want to join in on a bulk order from Roses Unlimited, I do a bulk order with them every year that saves a percentage off both the roses as well as shipping. You're welcome to order however many you'd like in that shipment from RU and then come down to Lincoln to pick them up. It's too late for this year, but think about it for next year if you're interested. Cynthia

You had an earthquake in MD? How odd! But I remember when my daughter was a baby (1980?) we had one here in Colorado too, centered in Arvada on the NW side, and I felt it in Aurora, on the SE side of town. I guess they hit all over every now and then.

OOoh, I bet that was scary. I am terrified of earthquakes. Some earthquake movie I saw when I was a kid scarred me for life, lol. I am afraid the ground will open and swallow me up, lol. We were in Louisiana and they had several happen in Texas last year while we were gone. Very strange.

It wasn't scary. It was pretty cool but that's because it wasn't strong and there was no damage. It was kind of a novelty because we don't get earthquakes here. I can see how it could be really scary if it was strong and lasted more then a few seconds. The news reports said it lasted between 5 and 10 seconds here and we were closer to 5 seconds.

When a STRONG earthquake is less than 5 seconds, it is very scary, and those couple of seconds seem like an eternity! I have been through a couple of very strong earthquakes here in CA, and now when we have a small one, I freeze praying it won't continue on to become a strong one. My biggest fear with earthquakes is that my family would be hurt, but I try not to dwell on that.

I would freak out if the house shook for 2 seconds but here I would assume someone dropped a bomb on Fort Hood or something, lol. They set off artillary shells that shake the house every now and then and its probably 15 miles away.

That is pretty scary and pretty rare for MD. Even though I lived in California for a few years, the biggest earthquake I experienced was in Ohio. There's a huge fault right through the midwest.
