Digit, There many not be many gardeners from this forum that live near you, but I am jealous of the area where you live. We visit Hope Idaho, on the shores of Pend Oreille, every two years for a family reunion. My husband and I hope to buy land out there and settle down (someday) where the pace of life is a little slower. Last year we drove from Denver to Yellowstone, then on to Seattle and finally Hope Idaho before driving back home to Denver. It was only 40 hours in the car spread over 2 weeks. It is a neat drive from your neck of the woods to ours but it might be a bit much just for a plant swap. I grew up in the Seattle area but I vacationed in Walla Walla, the Tri-cities and Spokane often. Which area would you consider to be closest to your climate and growing conditions? I used to complain about the clay here in Colorado until I started digging up my parent's Seattle area yard and revamping their gardens. How do you add clay to soil? How do you remove the hundreds of river rocks? What do you do with soil that is essentially river silt? I actually thought about the logistics of shipping buckets of Colorado clay out there. Raised beds were the slightly more logical solution. On that note: Emagineer, Im sorry about the clay content of the soil in my plants from the swap. Im certain I was one of the culprits. ;) Digit, I havent seen common arrowleaf balsamroot sunflowers yet but I havent been looking for them.
