Leaf-tyer caterpillars feed on the foliage. That's why they build shelters among the leaves. They are inside during the day, very easy to find and squish them. Trust me, aphids are not a serious problem. Everyone has them in spring, but they don't do significant damage. Just wipe off the heavily-infested growth tips with your fingers or knock them off with a spray of water if you are watering. Or you can spray the new growth with insecticidal soap. I presume you are using the All-in-One soil drench product. Most people here recommend against it because you are applying much more chemicals to the garden than needed, the Merit component can cause spider-mite outbreaks, the insecticide doesn't work consistently, and the product is very expensive. The Bayer Disease Control containing only tebuconazole, applied with a tank sprayer, is very effective for blackspot. Most growers don't apply insecticides routinely

I'm going through similar thoughts, X. I moved to Miami Beach a few months ago, but before that I planted a garden in front of my friends apartment and I planted some cannas that I brought from Illinois, among other things. I had never heard of a canna leaf roller, all I knew was that cannas were tropical and were supposed to grow all year round in zone 10. I thought, "Yay! Cannas all year! Bring it on!". Well, then I picked up some books on Florida gardening and after reading them I was not so enthused, and rather dissapointed(I was also dissapointed to find that callas and agapanthus, which I was also looking forward to growing, dont do so well here either). And I always wondered why I never saw any whenever I would come down here. However the cannas I planted didn't get the leaf roller memo and are doing really well. I have noticed that the flowers seem to brown on the edges and I dont know if that is because of the sun, or salt, or what, but you only notice if you look closely at the inflorescence. I am planning on getting some more cannas(and looking for an elusive shortish canna with fuschia flowers), but I'm wondering if any new ones I will get will be so lucky as the ones I planted. I also wonder if the current ones are going to get it sooner or later.

What's mother nature got to do with it? Summer months in the Carolinas are consistently hot and humid. I have an irrigation system so the water source is also consistent. I've eliminated the infestation.....

Ruth, in my experience the leaves affected by leafroller will wither and fall off, and not affect bloom too much. But I do think for the long term health of the plants it's better not to ignore it. I have two Annabelles that get leafrollers every spring. I go through and pick off as many of the affected leaves as I can. If you have many it may be hard to get them all, but at least the leafrollers are only at work for a few weeks. You want to try to stop the cycle in future years (since the caterpillars will drop to the soil to pupate and get ready for next year). Insecticide is really difficult to time because there's such a brief window when they aren't inside the leaves.
