pine bark or brown cedar mulch
Comments (6)Many people opt for the slower to digest material "because it lasts longer" but one of the things mulches do is add organic matter to your soil and the longer a material takes to be digested the less organic matter gets added to your soil. The only time I have seen pine mulch float away with rain was on a slope too steep to be gardened without terracing, in which case even the cedar would float away. However, I would always tend to opt to spend less money on products that are about equal for the use I intended....See MoreP/s ID and diagnose browning on cedar
Comments (18)Call me paranoid, but I'm reading that aphids and spider mites can also cause browning. How can I be reasonably sure that it's drought stress not pest infestation? As already said, as far as I can tell, no silk bags - telltale sign of bagworm. ===>>>>> OK .. you are paranoid ... interior browning is NORMAL .. no conifer holds its needles forever .... it is highly increased by drought.. and that is probably increased by the other mature trees in the vicinity [change in vigor based on sub-optimal sun]... i would not waste money on hiring a pro ... thuja are one of the supreme workhorses of the conifer world .... not really all that affected by bugs or disease .... i would put the hose one .. water deeply ... i mean really deeply ... and see what happens next year ... in other words... 99% of what they all said above ... it is obvious ... based on the size of those trees.. that they have been there for what .. a half century ... so yes.. on some level... you are on the verge of too much TLC ... and that might lead to hurting them .. rather than helping them ... also..as noted... in that 50 years.. all the other plants have grown.. to now put your old plants into sun situations that are no longer optimal .... but what can you do.. cut them all down .... so.. just enjoy the show ... it wouldnt hurt to spend money on a local pro's opinion ... i am just saying i dont know if i would invest in such ... you might be better off.. spending the money on planting some replacements, based on the current sunlight.. so that if these do fail in 5 or 10 years.. the replacements will have had time to start to fill the spots .... but do leave room for removal of the other ... i am always planting things way in advance .... trying to avoid gaping holes in the garden ... ken...See MoreBrowning of Cedar Bushes
Comments (11)The neat thing about native cedars is they are used to growing in a dense patch so using them as a hedge works well and they tend to support one another. Singular ones are more subject to ice damage. They tend to be picky about siting. In a good site, you'll see lots of cedar while nearby only hardwoods will grow. Mine are getting a bit too much water and are slower growing but doing OK. Easy to transplant wild seedlings. Set in an area with good drainage and full sun, they grow very fast....See Moreadding room on to dark stained cedar house, color options for ext
Comments (11)cz90, thanks for the pictures, it really does help. I like the idea of the new addition being lighter in color since it will be the central focal point of your home once it's completed though I think it would look just as lovely with all the same color as the rest of your home. Are you afraid you won't be able to match the rest of your home exactly? You had a beautiful home before and I'm sure you'll enjoy having a wonderful front porch area when it's completed. I hope you share photos then too....See More- 16 years ago
