Watering container plant when the soil is too dry?

The soil in my native plant containers often becomes too dry and the water drains immediately out the bottom, no matter how slowly I try to add the water. Sometimes I resort to filling an empty plastic tub with about 6 inches of water and placing the plant container in it for a couple of hours. But this method is hard on me physically, because the containers are rather large and heavy, especially after the soil finally gets moist.

I have about 20 containers now scattered throughout my yard.

Any body have a better idea?
