when to take and how to store cannas?
Comments (1)Cannas must be protected from freezing. See below: Digging and storing cannas has been discussed in several threads. Do a search for "Canna Storage Suggestions" or follow the link: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/canna/msg1022430619189.html?39 Remember that each of us has their own particular circumstances and one may need to modify the suggestions to fit their needs and abilities. In zone 6 and colder, you will likely need to dig your cannas and divide the clumps and replant in the spring after danger of frost has passed; in zone 7 some are able to mulch well and leave their cannas in the ground (do not leave in exposed containers). Comments (7)I tried storing mine in a cold cellar which went to about 38 degrees F, and up to about 45 degrees F. I found that it was too cold, and I lost many of my tubers. Last year, I stored them in my wine cellar, ranging from 45 - 50 degrees F, and every one of them survived. That's what I intend to do again this year. I clean them, wrap them in newspaper, and store them in a large cardboard box ...or two... or three. I think that your problem was with the plastic pail which does not breath at all. I also found that peat moss sucks the moisture out of anything I put in it. Therefore I no longer use it for storing any bulbs, or tubers. In fact, I rarely have it around....See More9 things I've learned about canna in zone 5--storage, planting...
Comments (99)Linda, Thank you for asking. Yes, I confess. I love cannas. In my climate, there are only a few people I know that can leave them in the ground year round and I consider them magicians with microclimates. The rest of us must store them over winter somehow. I prefer not to dig mostly out of laziness. You are exactly right about the bubble pack and brown paper. Brown paper for darkness and bubble pack to provide some insulation since my garage is not heated. Once they all green up, I will pull out all the brown dead leaves from last year and clean them up. In late May, they will be able to stay outside all day. For now, the canna trolley it is. I also gave them some kelp water about every 3rd water. And this year, I gave them a sprinkle of milorganite because I read that it can give you huge cannas. I don't know all the variety names that I have. I never really kept track. I do know that I have Bengal Tiger which I bought last year and a yellow one called Harvest Yellow. I actually found that out by posting on this forum which was so fun! I have a red one, a hot pink one, and I have a dwarf variety as well. The pots are pretty full and I should probably divide. I did divide the yellow one last fall so I'm waiting to see how that turned out before dividing others. I don't have the best pictures of mine, but promise to try to get better photos this year. Comments (8)I live in Missouri next to Illinois, I have been growing cannas for the last 7 years. Through research I have a method for over wintering my canna rhizomes that has never failed me. I dig them up after the first frost has killed off the foliage, trim the stalk to about 2 inches, rinse off all dirt/mud from them, check for any damage or signs of disease,(cut away any yuck) and place them on a rack to dry with a fan on low to dry them. After about a day of drying, I then place them on top of dry potting soil in cardboard boxes (no lids, open to the air) and give a mist of Fungcide, and will typically keep a small fan blowing for circulation throughout storage in a cool dark corner of the basement. Every few days I check them and give them a mist of water. I am pretty medothical about making sure that any soft foliage dries so as to not promote fungal infection that will turn them to mush by spring. Last winter I tempted fate and did not dig them up, the winters had been mild for years. I mulched them and Well, last winter we had record snow fall and lots of moisture. I lost half of my collection, they were mush. Only the rhizomes closest to the foundation of my house made it. Happy to report that the ones that did make it grew and flowered beautifully :)...See Morecanna2grow
