Cat passing green stuff

Two days ago I brougt 3 cats inside (first time to do this).

They were about 1/2" long and I put them in a clear plastic box with paper towel in bottom and a leaf for each one. For 48 hrs everything was fine. Then I thought perhaps they should be at outside temp rather than inside, so I put them on a covered porch out of the sun.

Several hours later I checked and one was passing green stuff. I remember reading about that, but don't remember what that means and what I should do.

Any suggestions? These are monarchs.

Often they will poop green pellet looking things (called "frass"). This is when they are bigger. Just keep him separate and wait and see.

It is a Swallowtail. I have never seen that before... not where it's just runny like that and that much. I have seen the small trails of it before. All but one of my large swallowtails are ready to pupate, so we'll see what happened when I get home from work. Thanks all. I do have another two small Swallowtail cats that haven't moved off their leaves in days. I took them inside last night since we're having cold nights thinking this may help, but I think one may be a goner before too long. The other did climb to another branch. I guess we win some, lose some. This is my first full year of rearing, so it's all new experiences.

Good recommendations from Polly, above. Another caveat - don't buy into their descriptions wholeheartedly - even the catalog descriptions of the more traditional things, like apples, don't always give 'the whole story' - sure, one variety may be great in a small area of VA, but it might not ripen at all in northern IL, or might die outright in a MN winter, and might not get enough chill-hours to even set blossom buds in south AL. I've seen enough descriptions of some of the 'wierd' things, and then received first-hand reports from other fruit enthusiasts that I know, to know that everything is not always as it's presented to be. There are a few of those nurseries, specializing in 'exotic' fruits and such that you have to watch out for - you might think you'd be getting a grafted plant, but you may only be getting a seedling, which at best, may take an inordinate time to reach fruiting age, or at worst, may produce fruit nothing like what you thought you were getting.

Well...so far not one person has said that it's best to wait. I'm glad !! Kashka, I guess the "they" I was referring to was...I remembered reading an article a long time ago about losing a pet. And it spoke of what I'd said.....that often people rush in trying to 'replace' the pet they lost and they become disappointed. I didn't necessarily agree, but wondered if anyone else had experienced that. But so far, it sounds like everyone on here had a positive experience. So I say "poo poo" on that article...lol. And as many have said, I would never expect to replace Pinkey. When God made him, He broke the mold. As Ann said, every animal is special. Socks, I was actually giving thought to getting two kitties. I've never owned more than one, except when I took in a stray when I already had an older cat. She didn't like it at all...lol. But two at the same time would be a good thing. They could be buddies. I did at least make one decision for now. I have a terribly junky and messy spare room. It was Pinkey's litterbox room. It is piled with stuff and a lot of it is pretty precarious. Altho Pinkey never hung out in there, for a new cat it would be like a mysterious jungle to explore. And a good place to either hide in or get lost in or possibly even get hurt (falling boxes...lol). So I decided to get my house in order before I introduce a new cat into it. I want to be able to keep tabs on him/her and don't want a lot of places where he/she can hide while getting used to the new home. So getting a new kitty is my new motivation for getting my house straight. I think it's best. It's bad enough having to look under beds and in closets for where a cat can hide, much less having that junk room with it's many hiding places that I cannot reach. Thanks to everyone for all your loving support. And thanks for sharing all your touching stories about your own experiences with loss. It really meant a lot to me and truly helped me. GW is a wonderful community and has been a great source of comfort for me. Never did I know that my love of gardening and need to ask learn about my flowers would lead me to such a loving group of 'friends' :) And when I DO get my new baby, I will surely post a pic on here !! Oh, and thanks to everyone who said how handsome Pinkey was. It made me smile because my best guy friend always called him handsome. And I wanted to add, when I showed him the 2nd pic (him looking back over his shoulder), he remarked on his expression. He was not too happy with me at that moment. Kateskouros, We do exchange e-mails occasionally. She moved away quite a long time ago. Next on the menu is matzah balls! Again for the freezer. Cj, the chicken fat is for the matzah balls. There are vegetarian recipes, but they're different. In kosher cooking, chicken fat is a traditional shortening for non-dairy (i.e., meat) meals. There's vegan margarine nowadays, but it doesn't always cook well. (I don't keep kosher most of the time (a long philosophical discussion there), but one is always "more kosher" for Passover.)

Jennifer, it's liquid. The green stuff has stopped. I've separated him from the other 2; he's laying on his side with his tail curling under.

The two in the other box are not eating the new leaves I put in for them. I'm probably watching too closely!

Hi Sylvia,

Good plan to separate them. Hopefully the other two will make it!

As far as the sick one goes, might be bacteria or polyhedrosis virus - I believe I had the same issue earlier in the season. Tdogmom (CalSherry) knows much more about monarch issue - hopefully she will post!

In the meantime, here's a blurb from "Butterflybreeders.org" I do not know how true the scientific bits are, but they do have a great, easy-to-read list of cat/pupa symptoms, probable causes, and treatments - if any:

"Malnutrition and / or toxic poisoning (pesticides, etc.):

Symptoms shown by the caterpillars:

- High casualty rate during 1st and 2nd instar.

- Caterpillars may tend to walk of the plants in search for better food.

- 3rd Â 5th instar caterpillars may be found lying on the bottom of your container or pot in a semi-curled position (not their defensive fully curled position). Usually, they will die shortly. Sometimes they will be wiggling on the ground and expelling green fluid out of both ends.

- The caterpillar may not be able to fully pupate, can only push halfway through it's skin.

- The chrysalis may be slightly deformed or have a bumpy texture rather than it's normal smooth shell.

Treatment:

The first three points above are likely caused by pesticides, bleach residue, or some form of toxic poising. The best thing to do is to fully rinse your plants to ensure all residues are removed. If this does not work and symptoms prevail, it may be possible that the plant has a systemic pesticide. At this point, it would be necessary to change your milkweed source. See Appendix B for a picture of our plant rinsing station.

The second two points are likely caused by malnutrition. I would recommend trying to get a hold of a fresher source of milkweed. Usually, the above final two symptoms are found when feeding late season wild milkweed that is somewhat dried and lacking in nutrients. It may not be possible to try a new milkweed source, but it is highly recommended as this is likely your problem."

I keep my cats in separate containers, and two of mine also spewed this green liquid. One that did this (the thrasher; you may have seen my thread about this guy), and he pupated today. After I cleaned out it's container, the diarrea stopped, as did the thrashing. I marked it's container "the thrasher", since I want to watch this one carefully! I don't recall which of my others had the same thing, but I'm not sure if it was the one that recently died (black death) or if it had pupated. I currently have 8 chrysalids, so it could've been any one of the other 7...

I have seen the green diarrhea and weird behavior with pesticide poisoning.

Sandy, thanks for the link; I saved it. I put the cat out of his misery. He was on his side and looked like he was getting dehydrated.
