Monarchs EAT Butterfly Bush????

I have milkweed growing & a monarch cat happily eating the leaves! A few feet away, I have a butterfly bush.

I have a monarch EATING the leaves on the butterfly bush. I thought they only ate milkweed? Can anyone explain?

I would have to see the Monarch actually chewing on the Buddleia to believe it. Can you take a picture? Maybe the Monarch has a mutation and is not able to determine its correct food. I admit anything's possible, I'm sorry I'm so skeptical.

He just got tired of eating the same old slop.

OT: I watched a Sachem Skipper lay an egg on my butterfly bush a while back. It couldn't have been intending on the cat making it to the grass. It was 5 feet up the bush.

Hi there, congrats on that gorgeous Monarch, looks like a fresh eclosed one.. :) You can tell the difference of male and female by looking at the hindwing: the male has one black spot on each wing, the female does not.. Butterfly-Greetings Susanne(SUE) Here is a link that might be useful:

Anything that would stop, "bugs" eating your shrub would be detrimental to the butterfly larva. Are you sure it's not butterfly caterpillers. A search in the evening with a flashlight might turn up slugs or snails, (hand picking is involved) Enjoy Rai

Yes, I'm going to try that. It's just damp newspapers rolled up and left about the garden near where you find them. Then you collect them in the morning and they should be in there and you throw them away. Supposedly they enjoy part shade and lots of mulch, which I have a lot of. Sunny exposed gardens have fewer earwigs. Your garden seems a bit like mine in that regard, Terrene, part sun and mulched. I've had a couple of years with a ton of earwigs eating everything. This year is not as bad for some reason. I did look them up last night and evidently mid June is when you would expect to first start seeing them. They are a little early like everything else this year.

Boy do I feel dumb. My husband & I have been watching this monarch eat our butterfly bush & didn't realize that we have a milkweed growing with our butterfly bush. I didn't plant it there! They are both in the same container. Of course the monarch is eating the milkweed, not the butterfly bush.
Thanks everyone for responding to my post, I do feel dumb!
