How Do You Get Seeds From Canna Fruit ?

I am new to the "Canna" scene and mine are doing extremely well. They have started to flower and subsequently produce fruit. My question is what do you do with the fruit in order to plant more Cannas ? Do you stick the fruit in some soil ? Do you open them and take seeds out ? What is the next step(s) ? Thanks !

You can do a search for "canna seed" in the search box and likely get good information.
You do need to know that the seed capsule needs to dry (turns brown) so the seed inside will fully mature. There are a number of hybrid cultivars that are sterile and "will not" produce viable seed. This is typically indicated by the size of the contents of the seed capsule. Mature canna seed is about the size of a green pea but will be brown to jet black. If the contents look like small mustard seed, fertilization was incomplete or unsuccessful.
Please remember that hybrid cannas do not breed true and the offspring will not be a clone of the parent. Do not call the hybrid canna seedlings by the parentÂs cultivar name.

I agree! If I want something that is exact I'll dig and divide rhizomes. But I love to see what I'll get by growing from seed. I have a gorgeous sun gold colored canna that the original seed came from an Omega. It has the heighth of the Omega. The hummers are quite attracted to it and it's offspring. And I can't tell you how many variations I've gotten from Journey's End. Admittedly I have had some cannas that didn't come true that I didn't like. But I just yanked them out and tossed them. I had one that had varigated foliage and a lovely pink flower (similar to the above canna flower) that when started from seed only gave me green foliage and is shorter. But it does make for a great potted canna. Ditto for a salmon canna where the original plant was 3 to 4 feet tall, but the ones from seed are only about 1' tall. I love it!! For the most part I really enjoy waiting and seeing what I'm going to get. Unfortunately, with all the cannas that I have, I'm starting to run out of room in my gardens. Jenna

a small square of muslin or piece of pantyhose might be useful for catching them. I record the date of pollenation, and pick my pods around 8 to 10 weeks later, and just store them inside until they are ready to open. Once they are brown and fairly dry I open them by hand if they haven't split yet.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say... Many types of fruit trees are almost always propagated vegetatively (cuttings, grafted trees, etc). Most apples for instance are unlikely to produce good fruit when grown from seed. Are you only interested in seed grown trees or are you just trying to find out how long it will take for you to grow your own fruit?

While many cannas do not produce seeds, some do. Where the flowers are is where the seeds will form once the flowers fall off. You will see green, spiky, round seed pods forming where each flower was. If that canna doesnt produce seeds, the pods will be elongated, oval-shaped. If that particular canna produces seeds, the seed pods will continue to round and enlarge. The pods will dry and eventually theyll split open, revealing big black seeds inside. The seeds are now ripe for gathering. Discard any shriveled, dimpled, tan or white seeds.
