Epson Salt, How Much, How often?

Hey I've been giving my banana tree some epson salt and it loved it. But I don't know how much and how often I should give it some.

Do ya'll also give the epson salt to your brugs? I never have but I will if I need to.

I have to say that all of my brugs are REALLY looking GOOD. Some of them are already about 4ft tall. I've had lots of blooms, but I've also had some drop their buds. I figured the heat probably had something to do with it.

All in all I'm proud as punch of all the brugs I got from all you fine people. I only have 2 doubles so some of you with the doubles need to put me down on your list for cuttings this fall. (LOL)

I do have a pink noid that has HUGE blooms. They are nearly twice as big as all the others and they themselves are pretty darn big. I wish I knew who and where I got it from. All I can say is it's one of my favorites.

Do any of you use milk jugs with pin holes in them to water your brug plants with? I have been mixing a little plant food in the jug and then filling it up with water and then the water and fertilizer slowly feeds the plants.

Of course these milk jugs are not very pretty, but if I know I'm going to have company I just gather them up and toss them in the shed until I need to use them again. LOL

I also have some big kitty litter jugs that I water my dogwoods with. For me it's just easier to water all these little hoglets this way.

What are your thoughts and what works best for you?

LOL ok Linda, I want one of every brug you have and two or three of most. Now put that down on your list for me please.
All kidding aside, I would like a few starts of some doubles too. Since all the ones I bought turned up their nose and toes at me. The singles are doing just fine and growing at a good clip right now. I'm just going to continue to feed and water them daily like I have been.

thanks for your kind offer. I never look at my list, I just look at the brugs themselves and go ohhhh awwwww ohhhh awwwww. If you know what I mean.

There is no scientific basis behind the application of epsom salts to enhance plant growth. Epsom salts is magnesium sulfate - it doesn't contain any "magic" ingredients for making plants grow better. It is true that both sulfur and magnesium are plant nutrients - but minor ones. Sulfur is nearly always present in sufficient quantity in the soil and with the application of nearly any type of synthetic fertilizer (and via many other common garden products). Magnesium deficiencies are usually present only in heavily cropped soils and over-application of magnesium can be harmful. As with any other type of fertilizer, routine applications just because it's habit or because the advertisements of the manufacturers (like MiracleGro) would like you to believe your garden will not grow without it should be avoided. Fertilize only if soil tests indicate a need or if your plants are evidencing obvious signs of nutrient deficiency. In most cases, unnecessary fertilization is worse for the plants - and the planet - than not fertilizing at all. If you mulch well with compost each season you will be replenishing pretty much any nutrient your plants require....no need to fertilize at all unless growing in containers. Cold treatment - how much, how often, and when?

This was taken out of the book "Greenhouse Tomatoes, Lettuce & Cucumbers" by S.H. Wittwer & S. Honma where they recommend 'Cold Treatment' for hardening off tomato seedlings. The cold treatment should be started just as the first true leaves emerge, whether the seedlings are still in seed rows or pricked-off. Air and soil temperatures should be lowered to 52 to 56 deg F for ten days to three weeks. A ten to twelve day cold treatment is adequate during periods of good sunlight. Three weeks are usually necessary in the fall and early winter when most of the days are cloudy and plant growth is slow. The amount of cold during the ten-day to three week period is more important than the time of day in which it is given. Cold exposure during either the day or night, or both, is effective. Night temperatures of 52 to 56 deg F are recommended when the days are sunny and partly cloudy. Following the cold treatment, night temperatures should be raised to 58 to 62 deg F. Cool daytime temperatures (60 to 62 deg F) should be maintained in cloudy dull weather. On bright sunny or partly cloudy days, temperatures of 65 to 75 deg F accompanied by good ventilation are suggested. Tomato plants properly exposed to a cold treatment develop large cotyledons and thick stems, with fewer leaves formed before the first flower cluster, up to double the number of flowers in the first, and often the second clusters, and higher early and total yields.

If it truly was the "best damned worm composting place" we would not be unpaid slaves working to fill somebody else's pockets with traffic for ad money. But other than that I agree. There is a tribe somewhere where when the men come back from hunting they do not walk into camp noisy and triumphantly. They sit around the outside of the camp a bit away for a day or so observing. Then when they are back in the rhythm of the camp and know they would not be disturbing it they quietly return. Possibly it is enthusiasm that stops this procedure of looking around for a couple of minutes before bursting with excitement for the topic. I'd say growing into the name is still a work in progress. "1/2 pound and would require around 4 oz of food, but they didn't say how often" is a play on "worms eat their weight in food a day". But with a bit of tempering because that figure is under optimal conditions. It also fails to mention or consider bedding which is of equal or really more importance. Does the 4 oz include bedding which the worms also eat? Please ask the source of that information for me because I have always been confused. With out knowing anything about your bin or even seeing it I can categorically say add half the amount of food you are presently and tripple the bedding. Time is your friend. The worms will work for you, (as we do for this site), just sit back and let the multiply and in time collect your easily gained vermicastings or worm babies. *horrified face at worm babies. Going well, just wish my plumies would bloom!! 20 plants and only one blooming. The good Lord is teaching me patience with these plants. I didn't really think about the fertilizer angle... but from what I know about foliage pro there isn't really an issue with salt. I think with slow release granules you may consider an occasional flush. But city water, from what I have learned, is the main detriment to container plants. I don't have any plumies in pots, but some of the plants that I do have in pots I pretty much flood the pot every time I water. So I use decomposed granite as a mulch to keep the soil from floating up when I water.

Sounds like your garden is doing great. I don't use the jugs for watering. I'd need too many and couldn't imagine filling hundreds of jugs. lol I use a hose. When I'm fertilizing I fill a barrel with fertilizer mixed with water and dip a jug into that or I use a hose end sprayer. For smaller amounts of specific plants like orchids i fill a 5 gal bucket. I use epsom salts at the rate of 1 tbls to a gallon of water once a month.

Thanks Karyn, I knew someone would come through for me. I'm just using the milk jugs on my brug plants. That way I can make sure they get the fertilizer on them and it slowly soak into the ground. This way I have no run off. I water everything else except the dogwoods with a waterhose. Let me restate that, with several 100 ft water hoses hooked together. THey are extremely hard to pull when they are full of water. LOL

I know this sounds awful but the last time I used the Epson Salt I just threw some on the ground around the plants and watered it in slowly. I guess that's the lazy way of doing things huh?

I'm really thrilled with how big my plants are getting. I can't wait until this fall to see just how big they will get.

Well I've got to run out and water a few things. I was holding off because it was suppose to rain but it looks like it's already south of us so...I'll go drag the hose around and water some of the stuff that looks dry.

P.S. Those squash we're eatting are out of this world. George grilled some of them on the grill and they were to die for. ummmm ummmm Good!

Marian: I sent you 2 pink noid cuttings and they have very large blooms. Did you receive more pink noids from someone else? If not, then they are probably mine. Glad you are enjoying!

I just finished watering my brugs and dahlias with epsom salt. I use a handfull (a rounded tbl) of salts to a watering can which is about 2 gallons. So it is similar to what Karyn is using. This I do once a month, also. It tends to make them a deeper green. My father used to use it as a laxative. I get it has a similar quality to the plants......clears the track and gets those juices flowing. LOL
