How big will a dwarf grow?

Hi, all! I have a lovely dwarf variegated Eureka lemon tree that's growing in a pot on my patio. I'd like to plant it next to a wall but I want something in that spot that will grow about six to eight feet high. The lemon is now at three feet high. Is it possible that it could grow another three feet if it's in the ground?

If not, is there a lime variety that wouldn't get higher than 8 feet and could be planted next to a wall?

I also have a dwarf pomegranate tree in a pot -- does anyone know how high that little guy might get if planted in the ground?

Dwarf citrus grow slowly to usually about 4 to 6 feet (maybe taller after MANY years).

Semi-dwarf citrus grow to 8 to 12 feet but are often kept at 6 to 8 feet with persistent pruning.

When you say "planted next to a wall", is your intention to espalier it? If so, semi-dwarfs are better coices.

True dwarf pomegranates (e.g., 'Chico' and 'Nana') grow to about 3 x 3 feet.

Dwarf is a relative term. If on flying dragon roots it should never get taller than 8 feet. Some citrus called dwarf get to 15 feet. Four Winds grown citrus is true dwarf. A Eureka lemon from Menlo growers labeled "Dwarf" I planted in a half barrel I had to replant in the orchaed. Al

Ditto what Alex said. In most places, you're likely to find a crabapple close enough for pollination, but you may get better fruit set if you provide a pollenizer near by. The tree's precocity will depend on variety and rootstock, but most dwarf trees are fairly precocious. Growing in a pot is fine if you can provide proper soil moisture. As Alex said, its a lot more work than growing them in the ground. How often you have to repot will depend on your soil mix, but typically it will need to be done once a year or every other year. if you can post a picture that would help with and assessment. I couple of ideas that come to mind would be this the tree will naturally try and grow upright so you could leave it be and see if a new branch tries to become the new leader. You could train the branch you have left to be the new leader by using the techniques that bonsai growers use. I had an off balance meyer that I tied one branch off to the pot to pull it the direction I wanted it to grow. After a couple of months it kept that direction on its own You could "pug" it meaning cutting the whole tree off, ABOVE THE GRAFT and let the new branches that will grow form the new canopy. the main trunk will most likely flush new growth at or just below the cut and will grow vertically again if it doesnt die off. i am of the firm belief.. that NOTHING ever stops growing ... i have no clue in the boxwood world .. if size estimates are at ten years .. if so.. and under my logic.. presume twice as big in 20 years ... once again ... when the say dwarf... they mean it has a slower annual growth rate.. than the usual suspects ... it is not a word used to describe its ultimate size ... you seem to want to think.. there are different rules for different plants ... there usually isnt ... ken

I like to get my seeds from vendors that grew their plants in areas similar to mine, if possible (however, most places are pretty different). The reason I like to do this is acclimatization. If a plant gets used to growing in a greenhouse, or a vastly different region, it might take a few years of growing in your climate to get it acclimatized sufficiently. I think acclimatization to your own personal soil and water is as important as acclimatization to the climate, however. Seeds from my friend a couple miles away just don't grow the same in my soil. Even my neighbor's yard is different with seeds from the same seed packet. When I say they don't grow the same, I mean the production and taste is different. The plants can still seem healthy.

LOL! So sorry, Al. Menlo puts that "dwarf" label on all their citrus which is pretty misleading, but they actually do have both dwarf and standard size. I don't know why they use the same label for both (cheaper? easier?), but it sure is confusing.
Usually the standard sizes are on a small trunk, like a little tree, while the dwarfs (dwarves?) are low and bushy.
