Transition between xeric zones

I am wondering about some good plants to transition my xerix zones. I have a garden bed of Daylillies, Agapanthus, Carolina Jessamine, Mandarine on one side and the veggies on another. I want to transition to a dry garden with almost no summer water that will feature a sitting area surrounded by visually interesting plants. Primarily I am looking for a good assorted shrub border that would be somewhat casual... not neatly clipped. mmmm how to decribe my landscape style... I guess I would say mostly Medetterranean. As for colors... I usually stay in the Deep Yellow, Purple, Burgundy Range (with Orange and Blue Accents.) NO Palms, Pastels or Red.

I really am thinking starting with a small Kumquat Hedge??? with perhaps a rock garden transition??? I would like the dry area to be California Natives and the soil is Rocky Clay. The problem with Ceonothus I THINK for the transition plant..is they don't do well with any summer water and I was worried about them being located next to a bed that gets regular water. Maybe Manzanitas??? The area is FULL SUN and I don't want a large tree because it would block our view and I do have shade trees elsewhere.

I know! Pictures would be useful... I need to learn how to do that!
