Hi
I used to grow cannas extensively but due to leaf rollers
virus mostly switched to heliconia
Had one in a pot that has limped along for years seldom flowering and often going dormant
Two years ago i repotted with clay and top soil and placed in standing water up to the top,thinking it would provide foliage until water plants mature .
It responded by growing almost rampantly it flowered then branched and flowered again is well over 6 feet tall and has 3 new sprouts. as well as seed pods.
the virus is no longer a problem and no leaf rollers .
Curious as to why??lol Might add that it is in fairly dense shade except in mid winter.I'm in 10 florida though the last two years have been above 40 min. Have no idea as to the type but supposedly a dwarf with yellow flowers and orange spots
Thinking of trying cannas again and using this method
I know some types are aquatic but exclusively??

Hi Gary, I don't have the answer to your question, I just wanted to say that I have been using Cannas in my pond for some time, in my experience, the same canna has given me different results, some years has done well and others not so good...I wish I knew why but I'm willing to bet it is cause of a combination of different factors

Gary,

I think you will find that nearly all our hybrid cultivars respond quite well in an aquatic setting. They usually do best when not totally submerged in water but will respond well during the warmer growing season. I would caution on leaving them underwater in their more dormant season.

I am sure the leaf roller problem has not disappeared in your area and virus issues are predicated on the source of any new cultivar. The lack of leaf rollers in your immediate area may be due to a colder winter which eliminates the overwintering larva. I suspect the height of your plant is directly related to the lack of direct sunlight. This is always the major factor in plant height with cannas.

Without a photo the cultivar cannot be identified and may not even with one.

I have houseplants that have been in the same water-filled jars/containers for up to 5 years. I use plastic kitchen containers, short and tall wide-mouth and narrow-mouth Ball jars, tall/short/narrow/fat drinking glasses and many coffee mugs, old tea pots, flower arrangement holders, colored antique jars, beer mugs. I keep teeny-tiny cuttings in those miniature jelly sample jars. I rarely fertilize them, although I have dropped a single ball of time-release fertilizer in the bottom. All of them are very healthy. Some I recently began in water with pebbles/glass beads so that they will transfer successfully to soil later on. I think they feed on dust and plant leaves/roots that break off, drop and rot, and on the light mossy stuff that sometimes grows in the water. If it smells at all, I change the water and scrub the container. Syngonium (Arrowhead) -- three different kinds Pothos -- variegated and plain green Philodendrons -- Monstera, Heart-leaf and a red-stemmed variety. Dieffenbachia (really large and miniature) Wandering Jew Miniature Palm Spathiphylum Impatiens Avocado Seed, and more. I would try pretty much ANY plant in water. :)

Since I started bottom watering only, I've had almost no mold issues and no damping off of sprouted seedlings. Once first true leaves are more or less fully formed I've potted up to a 4" pot, put them all in a shallow tote and water to an inch or so in the bottom. Let them use that and be dry a few days or the first signs of droopyness, then another inch in the bottom. If inside, under lights, an ocillating fan gently blows a few hours/day. Once outside, the wind takes care of it. Lots o storms lately. Mine need to be getting planted but so far, its been good to hold back. The totes let me move them to the sun, or under the porch, weather depending. If the weather doesn't settle down, I'll be potting up again but I'd rather plant em.

Thanks Juneroses! Danny, I am not planning on using hydrogen peroxide in my aquarium, but this is good information to know just incase I decide to grow other plants in a vase with water. Yes there is sufficient aeration in my aquarium, I am using a canister made for a much bigger tank than mine. That is the reason I want to add these plants to my tank, because I want them to remove excess nutrients from the water. As for fertilizer I will be sticking to regular aquarium fertilizer (Seachem Flourish), I will never add fertilizer that is not safe for my fishes. As for Foliage Pro, I was asking because I have two potted pothos and wanted to know if I can add this fertilizer to the two pothos I have. Do you know which fertilizer is good for potted pothos or just house plants? The little fishes I am homing in my aquarium are just barbs, three tiger barbs and one tinfoil barb. Once the plants are transplanted into my aquarium I will be adding about four more barbs to add more nutrients in the water column. I will be protecting the roots, because these fishes love to eat plants. This use to be a picture of my beautiful plants I had in my aquarium, but when I added my tinfoil he had himself a really tasty snack and ate my plants. The plants then started to die off and I removed all of them because it was causing ammonia spikes, which are not got for fishes. I have mastered aquarium plants, but I have not mastered house plants. I know with time I will! Thank you everyone for all the information.

the last two winters have been above normal 40 was the low and then only for 3 hours. the leaf rollers are busy attacking the one i grow in a pot in full sun!! lol
Cannas tend to be evergreen for me if no frost but had constant bug problems and they hated my soil. had costant virus problems so generally whacked them off in the fall Heliconia gives a similar effect and are everblooming except for frost.
the variety doesn't matter was just curious as to such a turnaround when I seem to be violating all the ruleslolThe aquatic plants are maturing now so will be removed . Have no idea where I'll put it .Know it will remain in a pot but my garden is maturing and all i have is shade, heavy shade , and very shady shade lol
