My night-blooming cereus

I have a few night-blooming cereus buds these days. Last night, one of them opened. The blooming started at around 8.00pm.

But tonight (my time), another bud started opening at around 6.20pm. So early. Here're a series of photos depicting various stages.

First opening:

Hi Xuan,
the flower is beauitful....(I have one too,
and it bloomed for the first time about a
month ago)..the flowers are so huge and fanastic looking

I cannot see much of the plant itself, but it looks like an Epiphyllum oxypetalum. The one I had opened around 7 pm, like yours.

I had two or three night bloomers in pots when I lived in Orlando until 5 years ago and have had them in the ground ever since. The first place I put them seemed to get too much sun, so I moved them under a large oak in the back yard. They have grown nicely, but are still not blooming profusely. I found when they were in pots they bloomed more often when a bit pot-bound, so have assumed with no restrictions this will slow down a bit. Time will tell. When they are ready to bloom I call a bunch of friends over for "beer 'n blooms" and hope my timing is right!

Those are normal especially in high humidity.In the wild the plant climbs onto and along objects/mediums by way of these aerials.My night blooming cereus(epiphylium oxypetalum)is 12 feet tall and grows aerials all along its unripe(green) branches but not on its woody older growth.These little roots can get quite long but on my plant they eventually dry up as they don't have anything to attach themselves to. I thought about making use of them by wrapping the bamboo canes that support the plant in moss and thoroughly wetting it once a week so that the ariels may grow into the support/moss,this way I can avoid having to fasten the plant with ties.If you don't like the appearance of these little roots you can simply remove them or if possible lower the humidity to prevent them from growing in the first place though the later may slow growth as these are tropical cactus and enjoy high humidity.

Marie: If you want to post photos onto the forum, you must first upload them onto a photo-hosting site, such as Picasa or Photobucket, etc... You can sign up for a free account.

Then, after having your photos uploaded onto one of those sites, you can copy the HTML code of the photo there and paste that into your post on GW.

You can also post photos following the instructions in the link below.

Xuan, your flower is beautiful! Was that a cutting that you have growing in water that bloomed? That is so neat, I didn't know you could grow them in water!! I have two planted in soil and I guess it will be awhile before they every bloom. Ellen

Ellen: I'm sorry the photo confused you. Actually, I didn't grow the cutting in water, I just cut it off from the plant outside and put it in the vase to observe the bloom.

I believe epiphyllum, as their name suggests, would be better planted in a soilless medium, sort of like those used for orchid. I planted all my plants in chopped tree fern, an organic medium quite renewable in my home town.
