Help with trumpeted jade I am killing

I was hoping for some advice. I seem to be killing this plant. Not sure if I should repot, check the roots etc, I inherited it in dec and all was fine. For sure it wasn't getting enough light. I watered once every two weeks about a cup or two. I have now moved it to a brighter spot up stairs by a south facing window. I am letting it dry out for fear it had been over watered. I don't think I have though. Just very concerned as its been dropping lots if leaves looking yellowish vs green. I am a novice and don't know what to do. I don't beleive it has Rot but over water is my guess. I dunno. Any advice is welcome.

I am by no means an expert with Jades (I'll leave the more thorough answers to someone who is), but if you are concerned about overwatering, I believe you should pull it out of the pot and check the roots. Sometimes a plant responds above the soil due to what's going on beneath.

Hi what a beautiful jade.....
to check to see if it is wet...take a wooden stick, you know the kind you use to BBQ with they're long and thin...and stick it down in the pot leave it for 5 min. or so and then pull it out and see how wet it is.....if you think its to wet pull the plant out of the pot take off as much of the wet soil as you can and repot with dry soil and don't water it the dry soil will pull the wet away from the plant.....I know others might have better ideas too.....good luck its a great looking plant still.....linda

Brugmansia and angels trumpets are the same thing. They usually form more of a large bush or tree shape. The blooms on brugmansia hang downward or horizontal, never point up. Brugmansia can be dug up and overwintered indoors and be used year after year. Datura are more like annuals and are also called devils trumpets or thorn apples. Their blooms point upwards. It is my understanding that dats don't overwinter well or do well from cuttings, you are better off to start from seed each year. There are purple dats but still no purple brugs available in the US, although there are some purplish ones in Germany. Hope this helps. Shawn

I made an error in my original message. My apologies. Someone else in my household is in charge of the watering, hence my error. The roses are on their own irrigation system and are only watered once a week unless you count the unintentional watering that the neighbor gives them. Thank you JAYK for your advice. You said just what I was afraid of--that it wasn't necessary for me to pull the leaves off the plant. I just spent over an hour reading some of the rose forum thread on chemicals to use on black spot and am still (more?) confused. Do you or anyone else have any advice for the rose bush that I pruned almost all the leaves off of (only about 6 leaves left on it now)? Do I use the neem oil my local nursery suggested (and have already purchased)or do I heed some research I did that shows neem oil can interfere with photosynthesis and wait for more leaves to grow before using neem? Or use something else entirely? A relative says he remembers using something many years ago that went in with the fertilizer in granular form and so didn't need to be sprayed and thus limited the safety precautions which I would certainly appreciate if it works. I didn't see anything about this product in the thread on black spot that I read; maybe it was there and I missed it but most of the discussion seemed to focus on commercial sprays. I'll do so more reading tomorrow and see if I can find a reference to it. I'd very much like to save the bush; it was well-established, planted about 15 years ago. I'd rather not be the one to kill it. Thanks.

Not sure what your climate is - however, I'll share my own experiences with Thompson and Chardonnay types. The Thompson was planted on an arbor - this is it's 3rd spring. Actually, It didn't look like it was going to survive either. Some one said they get "Pierce" disease, and I assumed that was the problem. The main vines got all spotty - and the leaves looked awful. I learned grapes need severe pruning - (90 %) - so whacked it pretty hard and said a prayer. This spring - I tossed some aged chicken manure at it - even tho it looked almost dead. Well - the sun came out - the weather got warmer and now the entire arbor is full of vines. So maybe it's just a quirk - but for now I'm hopeful. The Chardonnays are in another spot - an arbor next to the house that reflects southern sunshine - and is looking very well. My only concern is - that my location - 6 blks from the ocean - with summer fog - may not be to their liking. But who knows - perhaps this year they will be stronger. I never get tired of saying this, but once again my GardenWeb family has come through for me ! You all are simply the best. I guess most people google search everything. Not me - if there is a question needing an answer, I know someone somewhere on GardenWeb has it. Well, today I experienced a most serendipitious moment. I went to visit my 90 year old mother, told her my latest post - this time on killing Jades - and all your kind and helpful replies. With that, she gives me her beautiful jade plant. Said she can't care for it like she once did and knew I would love it. She also said "And if it ever starts looking bad, call one of those gardeners up and find out what's wrong with it." Don't think she quite understood this is an online forum. Ha ! The planting medium it's growing in is just as you all have described - good and gritty - so I felt comfortable transplanting my own struggling little jades at the foot of the larger one. It's so pretty. Just wish I had a decent enough internet connection to share a photo of it with you. I'm working on that. Again, thank you all so much for your time and advice. Great plant. I am also not the expert in this area but I have noticed over the years that not only my Gollum/Hobbit hybrids but all of my jades will get yellow leaves early in the spring when I first put them out. The other thing is those branches look long and heavy and you may want to consider trimming them back. Next, if your leaves are firm, I would guess the roots are fine and the leaf loss is just part of aging leaves. Just some thoughts...

Thanks for help keep it coming. I am very concerned. It's loosing lots of leaves to me but maybe it is just age. Also some if the new growth little shoots that stared have shriveled and fallen or stunted growth

Something else you may want to do is fine an outdoors location with lots of good light. That's assuming it is available to you.

Hello! Doesn't look to be dying to me.

As advised, more light if possible. This time of year, my Jades tend to shed leaves as they grow new foliage.

Mervtan,

You have a great looking plant. I have experienced this with my Jade plants as well, sometimes they drop some leaves to grow.

You can feel all areas of the trunk from the base up to see if anything feels mushy. The trunk should be pretty solid. If you feel any soft areas on the trunk that feel mushy please post back and we can help you take further steps.

I would try to get the plant outside and acclimate it to full sun if that is an option for you.

Best of luck, you have a very nice plant and from the looks of the picture it seems to be doing just fine :-).
