When to plant canna in South Jersey

Hi...Being new to canna lilies I was wondering if someone could advise me when the best time to plant in South Jersey would be. I have bought about 30 bulbs for my garden this year and can't wait to plant them, yet don't want to rush things.

Should they be started in pots? Also, I was wondering if it was safe to leave them in the ground throughout winter. I have noticed some people doing this, but am not sure of thier rate of sucess.

Do not plant them until the danger of frost are over. I wait until the ground warms about 50 degrees. If you want start them in pots and then transplant them when it is safe. I use 1 gallon ziplock bags makes it alot easier to transplant. Either way make sure they get alot of sun and warmth.

I have left several Cannas in the ground and they overwinter fine. When the frost hits the cut the leafs to the ground and mulch. HTH,Tara

dont leave in ground in winter in jersey they dont make it dont be lazy

on a half acres lot.. minus house.. driveway.. garage.. etc ... most likely you dont have room for more than one tree ... i personally dont like maples .... but that is another post ... but lets be clear .... its going to be a decade or two.. before it shades your house ... there is no instant gratification with trees ..... so go for it.. with the full understanding.. that next house... you buy one.. with a healthy tree already there ... i moved here 14 years ago ... the trees i planted for the kids to climb.. are now ALMOST climbable... and the kids are teens and dont turn off their technology.. and go outside... that plan sucked... lol ... thanks god you returned the pears... and you know why see link for proper planting ... mulching.. watering.. etc ... more important than the tree chosen.. MonaRae, Canna's are tropical (sub-tropical) plants, and yes, you should wait till the danger of frost has passed before you plant them outside if you're planting potted ones. When I really want a showy mass of canna I start them indoors. Do that if you have the room do it. :) If you're just going to plant the bare tubers, you are probably be safe doing that the first of May. When is your last frost date? Cannas love heat and moisture, so make sure you keep them well watered. Have fun! Diann

I have tried growing seeds in milk jugs for a few years not and wow is all I can say. I put them out starting in Feb and march with the annuals in april. I think my last frost date is after may 8th here and seen it as late as may 18 hit us. Normally go by the Iris in my yard as a indicator when to plant out the tomato seedlings with out protection. Got a new fertilizer producer last year and my grass is greening up from the chickens. My tomato seedlings are not up yet but expect them soon. ML

If you plant them deep enough in the ground, they probably will survive, but the few that I left in the ground did not make it (they were very close to the surface of the soil though and probably did get frozen during the worst of the winter.
I just planted my cannas in the ground today. Some I started indoors already and are a nice size and a few were just starting to sprout now. The forecast looks a bit cool here on some days, but no chance of freezes and we are past the average last frost date already in my area.
