I've been gardening for 13 years and this is my first year with a rabbit problem. They are driving me nuts. They've left my zebrina totally alone, but ate the hollyhock right next to it. Have eaten two clematises right to the ground, all my morning glories, delphiniums, phlox, roses, all my annual poppies,asters, scabiosa, and all my sunflowers. I have sprinkled cayenne pepper on a lot of plants (per directions from a friend who owns a nursery) and that has helped. Also bought a liquid fence type thing, but it has rained here every day for about 2 weeks so I haven't used it yet. My chocolate lab loves to chase them, but I worry about him chasing them into the street, and he also wrecked a cranesbill by chasing the rabbit right through it. Oh well.

The answer is yes,and no. I've had hostas growing around my property and in my garden for nine years,with no problems with rabbits! This year,for the first time a rabbit came in and chewed off some tender ends of my emerging hostas. They have recovered nicely,and believe me there are plenty of rabbits around my woods! I am not worried about it,because we will probably have no attacks next year. The worst thing that happened was the hail storm we had in April,which left some holes in some hostas. Phil

This is what a rose cane looks like when chewed on by a carnivore: Here is the guilty party: I know she did it because I saw her do it. Not a problem as the cane was dead, but I still moved a temporary garden fence to block access to that rose (a rare one naturally--Rosa arnoldiana 'khirghisia'). Gizi is a Kuvasz and she LOVES veggies and fruits of all kinds. Lettuce? Delicious. Add carrots, broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes, oranges (including the peel, even when green), potatoes, etc to the list. Grasses are a delicacy (I have added many CA native forage grasses in part to satisfy her liking for green snacks). Near the top of her munchies list are rosehips. She adores nibbling those off the roses. If no rosehips, then she isn't averse to gnawing on canes--dead or alive. So I have to watch Miss Greedy Guts! All my pot ghettos have fences around them.

We have rabbits and they don't tend to bother the daylilies. Daylilies do not immediately go dormant after flowering. In fact, if conditions are right (plenty of warmth and water) many will flower again. Dormant daylilies will lose their foliage in winter, but semi-evergreen and evergreen daylilies will try to keep growing to varying degrees. The foliage will be frosted off, but you will see green near the ground. There are some daylilies that will go into a summer dormancy period (and some totally lose their leaves) if it is hot and dry. When the rains come back, they will start growing again. Hope this information helps. Nancy
