The fact that your seeds are heirlooms has nothing to do with how long it takes for them to sprout. The fact that they are "old" does affect how long it takes and even whether they sprout at all. Even fresh seeds don't always sprout. Older seeds usually take a little longer. So people usually plant more seeds than they want since germination rates can be low. Each kind of seed takes a different amount of time and requires different conditions. Fresh romaine and arugula can sprout in 3 to 7 days in cool conditions. Older sunflower seeds may take up to two weeks and require warmer conditions. How old are your seeds and how have they been stored? Some seeds can stay viable for more than 10 years. But if they dry out, they usually die.

Ashley, Welcome to the world of cannas. DonÂt be fooled by the term "mini". Dwarf cultivars typically produce a plant roughly 3 ft. in height with the bloom extending above the foliage. Since you indicate you will be growing on your patio, I suggest you grow each small plant in a container at least 15 to 18 inches (diameter). You could place your plants first in a smaller pot that is only 6 to 8 inches but within 4 to 6 weeks they would need to be transplanted into the larger container. You can cut off the misshapen and slimy growth. Cannas produce a prodigious amount of roots and they quickly become root bound in smaller containers. In warm (hot) weather they will need plenty of water as well as nutrients. You will find it advisable to have a shallow drain pan under each pot to hold additional water. I've started canna seeds 3-5 years old and had almost 100% germination rate. I let them sit out for about a week, put them into a baggie or envelope, and just store them with the rest of my seeds in a box in a closet. Jenna
