Community test(s) to determine auxhilary host plants. Good idea?

Hi,

What if, when one of us finds a caterpiller, we place it on leaves of a plant which is listed (infrequently) as a host plant.

For instance, I'm finding Amelanchier and Salix discolor as hosts for Red Spotted Admiral, Amelanchier and Spicebush for Easter Tiger Swallowtail, and other such not-certain findings indicated online.

Then we will know if these claims are accurate. However, COULD ID BE that even though Red Spotted Purples and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, for instance, MIGHT be able to survive off of Choke Cherry (Prunus virginiana) leaves, yet would OTHERWISE never intentionally lay their eggs on it, without our human interference as per the experiment.

Let me know.

Steve
