Climber front porch post-jasmine vs roses vs?

We have a front porch in need of some green up the support post. Full sun, warm peninsula climate not far from bay with some winds at times.

I searched and found a lot of info on jasmine (star and madagascar) but also have had Cecil Brouer and other climbing roses recommended. Heard about some natives like a particular honeysuckle climber but no luck finding a native climber that is really lush. Bouganvillea sheds a bit too much for my liking.

What I want is the most year round coverage/green, ok if not constant bloomer.

Any advice?

Near the ocean mildew may be an issue with roses. Star Jasmine looks tidy but it's slo-ow growing.

Pink Jasmine had lovely foliage and smells wonderful. It blooms in the spring and could do with a bit of a shave after it flowers.

Regular honeysuckle is nice. Lush and always blooming in warm weather. I have one on the back fence. It always looks good.

If you want to try something a little different, Clematis cirrhosa 'Wisely Cream' or 'Ourika Valley' is really nice.
I have 'Wisely Cream' growing on the fence behind my waterfall and I love the foliage (smallish, shiny green and evergreen), plus it flowers with the daintiest little cream colored bells in late winter-early spring.
I haven't seen it for sale locally, but I ordered mine from Chalk Hill Clematis. I liked it so much, I bought another this spring.

Hi Jerijen, The rose was either mislabeled and actually is SDLM or they sent the wrong plant; a SDLM Climber. I realized the error yesterday and sent an e-mail as they were closed yesterday. I am hoping that the plants were just mis-labeled, but if it is an error, I feel pretty confident that a correction will be made, as the supplier is a reputable company. If a mistake was made, it could have been avoided by reading what was on the invoice versus their tag; it clearly does not match. If this was an error; someone dropped the ball so to speak and we are all human, but it is an inconvenience for me the customer and my hubby potted up the incorrect roses for me. The SDLM is for my garden in Las Vegas, but I have no real use for a climber ( could possibly find a home for two of them) and contemplated sending the incorrect plants to my sister- in -law in Ventura if the supplier does not want them returned; I am not sure what their exact protocol would be, but this same supplier sent a rather unhealthy plant that died and they are sending a replacement in October; kind of apples and oranges in that one plant is dead and the other three are healthy just incorrect so I have no point of reference. After your advice, should I remain left with the incorrect roses, I will not send a SDLM CL to my sister in law as it would not be carefree in her garden. If the roses are not replaced then I will definitely seek recourse and never order plants from the supplier again; but I have no reason to believe that this will be the scenario with them regarding this situation. Mom planted 2 roses in the abbreviated garden of the home we moved to when I was 7. Still remember her & my grandma cutting the tin can pots they came in with big tin-snippers. One was Peace & the other Crimson Glory. Peace showed pretty flowers, but Crimson Glory was strait from Heaven. Still homesick for the mature acre of garden we'd left on the East Coast in our move to the Midwest, that one rose consoled & inspired me, becoming a nearly angelic beloved friend. When we were moving back East 5 years later, my folks promised another Crimson Glory in the new garden (and a horse, too, lol), but that didn't come to pass. Yet I kept the rose in my heart. By the time I was grown & beginning my own garden, discovered Mom had forgotten its name. Don't think I'd ever known it - simply The Rose to me. Searched nurseries for years trying to find The Rose. Though I grew & enjoyed many roses along the way, the one that began it all proved elusive. Twenty-five years into the quest, I found her again, waiting patiently for me amid rows of roses, my long lost friend - recognized by her unique song & familiar perfume - Crimson Glory! Yet she didn't thrive in my gardens, and faded away over time. Ordered her bare root when no longer locally available, only to face the same decline. Twice more, from different sources, same result. In that long ago Illinois garden, she grew well. Perhaps these later versions suffered from virus that sapped their strength? This year determined to try again, looking to find her both bush & climbing virus indexed/VID. But when I saw own root CG in the K & M sale for such an enticing price, went ahead & ordered. Not finding any info at K & M on virus indexing, assuming their roses are not. Anyone know? Sue

Hi, Lisa Su, and Friends, I guess I caught rose fever and took to ordering and planning more roses for spring in last few days to add to above orders.... I started looking up your roses and found ones I wished to add to my gardens... so I have ordered a few more also..... Souvenir de la Malmaison, Boubon 1843 rose, strong fragrance...nice big bush w/big blooms....for my femce border... Clotilde Soupert, polyantha , nearly thornless, strong moderate fragrance...actually may be a small rose that blooms in intense clusters like The Fairy...for my front hillside ground cover... And I’m planning on adding China Doll polyantha and Elegant Fairy Tale Roses to lower part of back yard hill, waiting for them to come available to order.... Oh, to plan my dream gardens. I now am up to 88 roses... roses in front yard...roses down side of house and lining back yard and some on hill by spring.... 20 new roses so far coming to plant....fun..fun.... Thank you straw and everyone for your photos and detailed info. I used to participate regularly here on this forum years ago, and then got rid of a lot of my roses. I have a lot of shade and I had a lot of jobs and no time and so I gave up on roses. I've found myself venturing over to this forum very hesitantly lol, lest I get sucked back in! But seriously I am thinking of adding a rose or 12 back to my garden, and I really appreciate some of the honest descriptions here (as well as the laughs - sitting here alone laughing out loud at some of them!). I know some of it is subjective, some depends on the zone or even the particular garden, but it's a starting point. Your photos are all gorgeous and Tina your garden is absolutely lovely! Perhaps passionflower? The flowers are tropical in appearance and the vine itself attracts the beautiful gulf fritillary butterfly.

Another to consider is pandorea jasminoides (aka Bower Vine). Comes in white or pink versions, plus a variegated version. Foliage is evergreen, shiny and tidy, the plant is attractive even when not in bloom. Becky

What about the rose Zeprhine Drouhin? It's nearly thornless, and it will take some shade (I have it up against my porch posts!).

I have Hibbertias on either side of my garage. It doesn't have any thorns or prickles and it's evergreen. It sheds a certain amount underneath but that's just once a year. It's getting ready to bloom now. I just don't know if it's hardy enough for your zone.

Why do just one plant? Jasmine will bloom in the winter and smell great. Older roses like Ceceille Brunner (get the sport that reblooms) will go all season, smells great and can be kept tidy. Throw in a clematis to add depth and color. CB is a great rose for the coast as it seems to be PM proof.

I grow a modern floribunda called Opal Brunner going up the small bannister to my front door. Great rebloomer, smells nice and is thornless.

What is the color of your home? You may want to pick plant material that will highlight it.

How about purple trumpet vine (Clytostoma callistegioides)? It is evergreen and the flowers look tropical.

I like Cape Honeysuckle - it is not a hip new introduction, but it is easy to grow, evergreen, and blooms most of the year. The big plus is that it attracts hummingbirds.

The advantage of cape honeysuckle is it takes clipping well too, so if you want to shape it, it won't hurt. The foliage is quite pretty. There's the standard red orange variety and there are also orange and pale yellow variants.

Like the roses you will need to tie it to your porch post.

Clytostoma is a lovely choice but it blooms once a year. If you like the tropical asymmetrical flower look, Distictis Buccinatoria is a good choice. The flowers open scarlet with yellow throats. I have that on on my fence and I have it trained into one of the 'doors' of my gate. The flexible branches don't mind the opening and shutting of the gate. It flowers as long as the weather is warm, but it does take a few years before it really performs.
