burrito startings

I took about 6 small clay pots and when i repotted my burrito from the store pot i started about 6 starts with about 10 little pods (not sure what you call them) in each one, i let them set for a few days and callous over first and layed them or just barely put them in the soil (did it both ways). They have been there probably 3 or 4 weeks as a good guesstimate and i mist them maybe once a week. Alot of them are just shriveling up and i dont see anything new starting. What could i be doing wrong? I tried starting a jade this way as well and it has just shriveled up and i dont see anything at all now, just dirt, should i just pitch this one or will something start now? Everyone here makes it seem so easy i must be doing something horribly wrong!

Sorry but I have no idea what plant = a burrito. Perhaps w/ a species name I could say something.

As to Jades, I just put plain leaves ON TOP OF (not in) dirt & let them start on their own. I don't mist or water them AT ALL, 'til I see some new growth & then only slight watering.

If you're growing them on indoors and the humidity is high enough to prevent them from drying out, leave them that length unless they begin to die back from the tops, then cut them shorter as they turn. If you're growing them outdoors and you're getting rains to keep them hydrated or the humidity is high enough to prevent them from drying out, leave them that length. I have to make mine shorter so I can bury more of the canes because I live in a savannah type climate. While we CAN get dews and occasional fogs, it is usually too arid for that much cane without roots to support it to remain alive and full enough of water to work. It rained several inches yesterday and into this morning. Now, it's a very cold, very dry wind. The water standing in the low spots in the street has already dried up. The wet soil in the shade of the house where the sun doesn't hit this time of year would usually remain wet for weeks this time of year. It's already beginning to appear to dry out because the wind is so arid. My climate just doesn't have the humidity or rain to support that much exposed unrooted cutting. If yours does, go for it! If where you're growing them on has enough moisture, go for it! As long as you can keep them alive, using longer cuttings should provide more stored nutrients to support the cuttings until they actually root and begin feeding themselves. If they appear to be shriveling because they're drying out and you can't increase the humidity or keep them sprayed with water a couple of times a day, trim them shorter. Longer cuttings like yours work quite well in mist propagators where the system mists or fogs the cuttings at regular intervals to keep them from drying out. If you need to, you can do the same, or you can cut them shorter so more of the total length is buried in the dirt. Does it make more sense now? Kim

Just an update: So far the first batch of Icebergs are doing well. Not seeing roots in the bottoms of the cups yet, but they seem to be green and plump with nice growth starting. The second batch is also doing well. And happy in their cups of gritty cacti soil. And the third batch, each started a week after the one before, of Mr Lincolns is doing the best so far! I had gotten busy and forgot that I had set the "burrito" down and forgot to put it in the cool garage for the first week. BUT, this is the first batch that came out of the burrito wrappers with little white roots pocking out. Looks successful....too bad I really did not want that many Mr Lincolns.

As I blogged, this method really seems most appropriate for dormant to semi dormant wood. Material which has gone through the "winter" and contains sufficient stored nutrients to permit it to break dormancy, or what it normally endures as 'dormancy' in its climate. Material used from too late in the year, in too active a growth state seems to not contain the required stored resources to permit it to root. It rots or simply refuses to root, instead. In retrospect, the material I had such success with after the initial batches, earlier this year, was mostly of the wood grown the previous year, which had gone through its winter "rest", with any nutrients the rose stored for later use. My thought is that wood grown this year, material in a more active state of growth, simply does not contain a reserve of nutrients to enable it to succeed in the wrapping method. That kind of material is more suited for mist propagation and other methods people have found successful over the spring through early fall with newer growth in their climates. I haven't seen evidence that refrigerating the material is successful. Most refrigerators are set about twenty degrees too low for the cuttings to callus. Instead, they appear to store like fresh produce, rather than differentiate and form new plants. That would be an excellent method of storing bud wood for next year's use, and is, in fact, very similar to how it's commercially stored, but not for rooting the cuttings. My best suggestion and what I plan to do, is to wait until closer to the end of "winter" when material which has hardened off (or hardened as much as can be expected in my climate) is available, then resume wrapping. Here, that appeared to continue being successful until nearly June, but that was last year with a very mild, later spring in comparison to most "normal" years. You are welcome to use whatever method you wish, but my suggestion is to wait until late winter, early spring before wrapping anything else, when you should be able to find wood containing the necessary stored nutrients to maintain it while it develops. Years ago, when Arena Roses experienced a high percentage of failure with their bare roots, they determined they were the stock grown in Arizona where a mild winter prevented the roses from shutting down and storing the required nutrients to break into growth when planted. The fields were harvested and shipped, with the majority failing to grow, simply turning black and dying, instead. It's what they called, "the creeping, black death". No pathogen was ever found. Mild weather preventing the roses from storing food, remaining in active growth instead, was the only logical explanation. I, too, have put a few cutting in larger pots with no problems. And like Rina, I use a full on gritty mix. I keep my plants in full sun, but they will get an hour or two of shade through the day. During my wet summers (and before I had used a completely inorganic mix) I move this plant into bright shade on my south facing lanai. By protecting it from excess rain, I deprived it of light. See how far apart the leaves are near the top and middle of the stems? It was etiolated. And the compact growth at the end of the stems is after getting back into the full sun.

Burro's tail/Donkey tail (Sedum morganianum)

If all you have are the little leaves, try putting the fat end down in the soil just enough so they stand up, You can use a spray bottle to water them in.

When I want to make another small pot of this plant, I'll clip off 5-7 inch section of stems from the mother plant, stripping a few of the lower "leaves" at the end so there will be a bare "stem" (about an inch long) which will go down into the soil. In a 2.5 pot, I have I think three or four cuttings which have rooted.

Water the cuttings/leaves well, then let the soil dry out between waterings.They should root quickly, the stems do for sure, in about a week or two.
Using the longer stem cuttings, you will have an instant smaller version of the mother plant.

okay billy rae tried this i am hoping it works, thanks for the advice. With the mother plant i was a idiot and put it in a pot with no drain holes thinking i will water just a little and it will be okay. It is horrible looking now, i may be adding it to the plants i have kicked off but this time it is my ignorance that done it, so i sure hope these take off so i dont lose it entirely. Sometimes i could just kick myself, that donkey tail was beautiful when i bought it grrrrr.

Pots w/ no drainage holes are a real problem for succulents. Watering just a little is not good either, you might as well not water at all. Succulents can withstand no water for long periods of time because their fleshy leaves retain water over long periods. Their ability to do so is exactly what distinguishes them, as succulents.

When I lose leaves of my S. morg. I just lay them on top of the mix in the mother pot & withhold water a wk or 2, they usually root by then. I respectfully disagree w/ Billy Rae, when start these I withhold water 'til I see a few new leaves.

I respectfully disagree too. Very respectfully Billy Rae. :-) I think I would wait to water too.

I got a cutting of this about 10 days ago from Biwako. (Very nice lady with beautiful plants...) Even though I'm already getting one or two teeny tiny buds, there are no roots yet. I found out when I accidentally tipped it over. So I would definitely wait a bit to water. If you already have, though, you should probably just leave it be.

actually i don't water but mist when the soil is dry, is that okay? I know the pot with no drain holes was a dumb idea and used it because it is what i had at the time...i should have waited to repot...you live and learn. I need to learn patience :). Problem is it was such a pretty full donkey tail it makes me sick that it looks so pitiful now. Maybe i can get some starts going though and all will not be lost :).

pirate gal i have tried just laying a leaf on top with my jade and with the donkey tail and it just shrivels and dries up...what am i doing wrong? I have tried not misting, watering, or nothing and it dries up?

I respectfully respect your different opinons:>)

The advice I gave works for me, both with leaf and stem cuttings,I have even put leaves back in with the mother and watered that day, then once if the soil was dry and had them root.
I guess watering (misting) leaves (as stated) and not watering for a few days at first can both work out, but it will depend on the soil used (should be well/fast draining) and the size of the pot your using (not too big) I don't use anything over 2.5 and then gradually work up as they grow.
Rooting stem cuttings is the fastest and quickest way to get more plants vs leaf cuttings. I always water them in and as of now have never had a rot issue thus far.

Keeping the pot small and the soil fast draining is key. I also keep the rooting section/leaves in some direct sun, I know, something you probably shouldn't do when rooting anything, but the sun helps dry the soil faster and warm the soil as well.

ymaddox,
if you have some stem cuttings you can play with, it might work out better for you if you are having trouble with rooting leaves.

If you try & practice patience (I know it can be hard to learn), this plant can/will come back on its own, may take a couple of wks, that's why one needs the patience. Mine looked like crap a while back, I just waited gave it water once in a while & it's come back on its own. Little dropped leaves are also starting up on their own. You should see improvement in a couple of wks.
