grasshoppers are back

I've discovered a few baby grasshoppers in the last several days. Last summer was the first time I ever recall seeing grasshoppers in my garden and they created a lot of damage, especially chomping on rose buds, leaving behind a kind of icky, black tar.

I don't know anything about the life cycle of this insect - I'm seeing the tiny babies mainly on one rose, so I'm assuming they laid eggs nearby. Any place I should look for eggs?

So far, it's a search and squish thing. Any other solutions?
