Pawpaw Sphinx Moth Caterpillar??

I was checking the Pawpaw for Zebra cats, and I stumbled across this guy. I brought it in for raising. Have I correctly guessed at the ID? Anyone here raised them before? Advice? Do I need to provide a burrowing substrate? Thanks.

It looks like an early instar pawpaw sphinx cat to me, Angie.

I found one a few years ago on yaupon, quite a surprise! I don't think yaupon and pawpaw are closely related. As the cat gets older, it'll develop purple coloring along the side that's very pretty.

It's a tersa sphinx moth, and it needs to continue to eat pentas leaves until it's ready to pupate. Like all sphinx moths, tersas burrow underground - if you like, you can provide it with some clean dry soil, with no bugs in it, clean leaves, or both, and let him/her burrow into that. Then you can see the adult when it emerges. Sherry

Susan, It's sad to see them run out of food. I had to watch the "parsley famine" after my black swallowtail caterpillars finished it off. I didn't see the dead cats. I did see the larger ones eating the parsley stems, that they had rejected before. Hope you find homes for them. Maybe it's one way nature controls/balances populations. Including humans. Scary thought. Gayle

For sure, those Catalpa 'worms' are GREAT fish bait... Been planting some catalpa seedlings around the farm, as shade trees for the livestock... need to put one by the pond. I suppose, 'If you plant it, they will come'... plenty of catalpa trees around town here, but I can't say that I've ever noticed one with caterpillars feeding... If I did, I'd probably pick a few and bring 'em home to 'seed' my locality.
