I have a couple of ideas. 1.) Have you discussed this with the person or person(s) who will be moving onto the piece of property that you are leaving? Perhaps y'all could make some sort of agreement that you can come back in a couple of months and dig up and move some plants. (If y'all do make such an agreement, you might want to get it in writing, though!) 2.) If #1 above is absolutely not an option, I'd make a list in priority order of what I most want to move. Then, working from that list, I'd develop a plan in writing. If the ground is not so frozen (or buried in snow) that digging is not an option, I'd try to at least move the plants that have fleshy roots, bulbs, tubers, etc., such as the rhubarb, peonies, iris, and daylilies, They can be dug, dried out for a couple of days, and held/transported in slightly damp peat moss or something. Then, once you're in OK, you could plant them in containers and let them grow outside until you could plant them in the ground at your new place. You probably could do the same with hostas, too, I guess, although I've never tried it. Rhubarb is marginal in our climate. Some years I can get it to grow fairly well but in the dryer, hotter years it just declines and dies, so it might or might not be worth moving, depending on how much you like to eat rhubarb. Chives are so simple from seed that they might not be worth digging up. BUT, if you can dig them up fairly easily, why not bring some along. Their little bulbs can survive for a significant period of time in a little peat moss, or even just wrapped in wet newspaper and placed in a box or bag. (Be sure they have good air circulation by not closing up the bag completely, though, or the little bulbs might rot.) I don't know if I'd try to dig up and move the astilbe, yarrow, burning bush or snowball bush, either, since moving space is limited. Some people here in Rockport planted two of them a few years ago and they have not died, but they aren't growing either. We did some research on them and found out that the coast is a terrible place to try to grow them. They don't like the high winds and high humidity, although they love the sun. They do need lots and lots of sun, and they hate shade. They do not transplant very well. If I were you, I would go ahead and transplant it to an area (be sure to protect the roots) that gets sun all day long and make sure that it is in an area that has well drained soil.

No, to my knowledge, the Monarchs do not overwinter in their chrysalides. I think it's approx. 10 days from when they form their chrysalides to when they eclose but if there are all ages out there, it could be a while before the last ones leave. I think Sherry was thinking of other little things that might overwinter on the grasses and stalks. Black Swallowtails will sometimes wait until the next year to eclose and I think it was Sherry who said she had one BST that waited two years. I've had some overwinter but since I raise them in enclosures, they are usually on a twig and I can overwinter them under the eave on the shelf above my potting table. The BST seems to manage the freezing weather somehow. Nature is a big mystery to me at times! Mary

Great minds think alike! I also planted VQ to co-mingle a bit with my ND. :) I think the difference in colour and bloom form is just enough to keep it interesting. Regarding transplanting now vs. waiting, I would let it finish its flush and then move it if it's an established plant. However, your cool temps would be perfect if it's fairly young. I'm also a newbie to general rose growing, but have had 75yr old ND for years and have now transplanted them multiple times, most recently this Spring. With the help of everyone on this forum it was very successful. I got as much root ball as possible and dragged them on a tarp to their new location, having already dug and amended the new (huge) hole. I water in after adding ~half the soil and again at the end. I also make a little berm around it to keep the water from flowing off. Lots of compost, but no fertilizer. I watered well until established.
