Question about severe pruning

I have an Isabella that is just beginning to come out after being just a little neglected before and during my move to a new place. I repotted it yesterday from its 3 gallon pot to a 10 gallon terra cotta pot, and gave it a couple of "friend" plants. It's roots have really suffered, and are not healthy at all, so I buried it very deep, hoping to get some roots from the trunk.

It's not shaped well, and I'd really like to cut it back drastically and let it come up from the bottom. I figure this is a bad time, since it obviously will be trying to make more roots, but wasn't sure. How long should I wait before cutting it back, or should I just wait to see what it does, maybe if it puts out a shoot from the buried portion?

I'd post a pic, but I just moved and haven't found my camera yet.
