Here, Micheline. Follow the link. I forget if they mentioned it, but each piece should have an "eye", that is, a little pink nub that will form the stems and leaves. Think of potatoes that are starting to sprout. The eye obviously should go on the topside.

FWIW, I got the link for you by going to google.ca and searching for "planting cannas". Or you could have headed for the canna forum and checked their FAQs. Not that I mind answering your question, but you could have found out what you wanted much more quickly that way.

I think it might be a tad on the early side for potting up cannas, but that really depends on where you live. Zone 5 or colder, I think I'd wait another couple of weeks. If you're out in the 'Canadian tropics', (southern BC), then you're ok. It's mostly that they get big fast, and you might run out of room for them indoors, before it's warm enough to go out.

All pieces of canna roots (the proper name for these sorts of roots is a rhizome) must have an 'eye' on them to grow. The eye is the pointy bit, but it can be quite a fat and dull pointy bit if it's a big piece of rhizome. I'd put the eye pointing in the general direction of 'up', but it won't really matter if it's not perfect - it'll grow properly on its own.

I burry the piece horizontally, about 1 inch deep. If the sprouted end is longer than that, and pointing in the right direction, it gets to stick out of the soil, if it's shorter, or pointing slightly wrong, then it winds up burried - it really isn't that important.

When you plant them you don't want to give them too much water - just keep the pot barely damp. Once they are up and happily growing (say about two or three leaves), then they'll like as much water as you can give them - most of them actually do very well as bog or pond plants.

If you are worried that you have started yours to early, you can slow down their growth by keeping them cool. Make sure the soil dries out a bit first though, otherwise they can rot. If you haven't watered them yet, then don't do so and keep them in a cool spot until you are ready to get them going.
