cheap grow lights....
Comments (16)Something like this would probably work for you are there's no reason I would NOT recommend it unless the slight hum from the magnetic ballast would bother you. Get 5000K bulbs for it. http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=245536-58659-NXU-6000&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=3168047&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=sim&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1 Below is a more expensive model with electronic ballast and slightly more energy efficient. Comments (3)I can't give an answer on CFL's but... With regular tubes: 2 20w T2's will not be near enough... you will need probably at least 6-8 bulbs. Esp if using standard magnetic ballasts (most 24" fixtures use cheap low-power-factor ballasts) you can get more light *if* you can find one with a commercial/high-power-factor ballast (rare-thing on that size light...good luck) -or- if you feel safe doing it you can use a T8 ballast to 'overdrive' (in this case if you use T12 bulbs the 'overdrive' will amount to basically what a commercial ballast would give brightness-wise. If you use T8 bulbs they will be truly overdriven and give more light...but...heat may be an issue (in any case with multiple lights) it may not be a good idea to attach the lights to a wood desk. Also use a mix of bulb colors (Daylight, Grolux, Cool-White) And if you can give the plants any natural sun do so... no artificial light will compare to sun...See Morewhere do you buy grow lights?
Comments (3)I've been looking on Craig's List for a High Pressure Sodium light for my greenhouse but I know so little about them that I don't know what is a good deal or not. I do know for seed starting you can buy cheap shop lights from a Big Box store. Sadly, that doesn't help me so my greenhouse is still dark.......See MoreWhere to buy cheap lighting fixtures?
Comments (13)I had good luck with shopping for light fixtures at Overstock.com. For example, I picked up five Kichler art-glass mini-pendants for my kitchen island for less than $25 each (including shipping charges!) Overstock had originally priced them at something like $59 but when I saw them and grabbed them, they were on sale for 60% off from Overstock's original price. At the time, my local lighting store had a very similar Kichler pendant light for sale at over $250! Overstock did not say that these were Kichler lights on their website but when the lights arrived, they were in Kichler boxes with the Kichler warranty cards still inside. And when I mailed in the warranty cards, Kichler accepted them. Just for comparison, here is a picture of one of my lights and linked below is a very similar Kichler light currently being sold for $210 at another online company that indicates the list price is $315. And you can bet that if my local lighting store has this newest version, they've got a price tag on it of at least $275. Apparently Kichler - and maybe most other lighting companies - changes their styles a little bit every year or so and gets rid of the old inventory by selling it off cheap to companies like Overstock.com. Then, eventually Overstock.com puts anything they've had in stock for awhile on sale too, so the discounts get even deeper. So, $25 for the model from last year (or maybe from 2 or 3 years back) versus $200+ for the very latest version??? I'll take last year's model - Thank you very much! BTW - With Overstock, oftentimes if you purchase enough at one time, they'll have free shipping and handling. And thus far, I've never had a problem with customer service with them.
