Vinefera grapes ( like Flame) are always more problematic than native American based grapes. The trick is finding the native bred grapes that does best in your area. For most of the U.S. that is some kind of labrusca grape. Try consulting The Grape Grower by Rombough. This is kind of a sore issue with me. The vinifera vineyards of central California are doused with more chemicals than you can imagine, all to get to market the mild flavored wines and table grapes that consumers have been brainwashed to prefer ( French wines are the ultimate, right?). American grapes tend to be fruitier tasting- much better to me. The labrusca based wine industry of New York has largely died out due to evolving consumer prefferences. Heard of the latest outbreak of glassy winged sharp shooters and Pierces disease on the news? Labrusca grapes don't even get Pierces disease and are just as productive in cen Cal climate. The largest grape growing industry in the world is based on a lie. The top soil and water tables of the Cal central valley are poisoned with grape pesticides. Heard of Woodbridge wines? Woodbridge Ca is contigous to Lodi Ca which has shut down a number of municipal wells due to illegal levels of toxic pesticides from grapes. Sorry, I just have a personal problem with vinifera grapes.

When I saw the heading 'native grapes' I thought a way to stop them was available. They come up all over my garden. Just imagine how much fun it is to try and remove them from a large berberis plant. When a great old black oak fell across my access road it brought with it a native grape as big around as my wrist and at least fifty feet long. Muscadine leaves are thin and glossy both top and bottom. In Maryland they are only found in the eastern half of the state and not very common. They do not have a peeling bark, your pic is not muscadine. If you're lucky you have V. labrusca or Fox grape. Leaves thick, firm and with light colored felt on bottom. For us grapes are blooming now. Your state may have 10 or more grape species. Only the two mentioned above are edible. Grape vines are dioecious, if you have a vine with only male flowers there will be no fruit.

Wild grapes with larger fruits are likely forms of or hybrids involving Vitis vinifera. The most common native grapes in NY are Vitis aestivalis, V. vulpina, V. riparia, and V. labrusca. The latter two are quite difficult to tell apart. They normally have small, blue-black fruit, a "foxy" flavor, and usually become more palatable after frost.
