Moving 2 GIANT Camellias...

My husband and I just bought a 60 year old home in Atlanta and there are 2 enormous Camellias in our yard. There is one in the front and it's so large it takes up half of the front of our home. And the other is right smack in the center of our back yard. The one in the back is about 15-20ft tall and the one in the front is about 10-12ft tall. We hate to just get rid of them, but they are so obtrusive we can't leave them where they are. We would love to be able to move them, but don't know how. Can anyone help? I will take pictures and post them later. They are enormous! My Mom lives in Texas and nearly had a fit when I told her we had these! Thanks for the help!

We are in gardening mode...so any info on transplanting these would be greatly appreciated!

I'd suggest that you should not do this on your own. Especially since you've had no experience and are relying on directions from this message board. YIKES! No offense to the terrific folks (experts, some of them!) who frequent these boards, but this is one of those situations where you (the camellia owner) needs to have some first hand experience. It would be like me calling my doctor to get directions about how to remove my husband's appendix. ;-)

You could call your local extension office for some assistance. Perhaps there are some master gardeners who need to work on their volunteer points and can come and take a look-see. You might also get some suggestions about who to call from them, too.

I've also attached a link to Camellia associations, and if you look, there is one in Atlanta. I'd make that phone call.

I will also suggest to you that if you make a concerted effort to get some professional assistance in moving these plants and cannot find anyone to help you, that you should not feel guilty about removing them. This is your property to do with as you wish, and you should be able to make full use of the yard. Yes, it would be a terrible shame to lose such mature camellias, but it would also be a shame for you to be 'held hostage' by plants! Do you understand what I mean?

Transplanting these camellias is very possible, if done VERY soon. The window of opportunity is closing for this season. It's my opinion that you need the assistance of professionals or experts.

You are in the state that is the home of the American Camellia Society ("ACS")headquarters. So, your resources are wonderful. You can reach ACS in Fort Valley, Georgia at 478-967-2358. Alternately, call Gene at his Camellia Nursery in Savannah, Georgia at 912-355-7361. I have more resources if you need them.

I've moved 3 camellias last year with success & not necessarily following the "rules". The largest one was actually a rescue meaning it was dug out in late March while in bud, covered with a damp sheet, then whacked back to nubs. It was offered on freecycle near my work & since my favorite color bright rose pink I was willing to try. I planted it in good soil in part sun & it regrew feeder roots putting on new growth by late June. The other 2 were 30 year old camellias that had been repeatedly hard pruned by former tenants. They were planted too close to the house & blocked a window. One resprouted from the ground. The other from an 18" trunk. Both are growing at the edge of the yard bordering native woods. The original owner was pleased I moved them further from the house & apologized for planting so closely. I mulched all of them & provided water during our summer drought. They're tough plants.

The most economical method of 'saving' these lovely, old specimens is to get in there and take lots of cuttings. Plants that old will be difficult to move, successfully, without the use of a small tree spade and professional operator. You 'might' be able to locate a highly trained arborist who can do this type of work, as well. Look for ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Certified arborists in the yellow pages. There are several in the Lowcountry of Georgia and SC, as I recall. Remember, the older the plant, the more fragile it is in terms of being able to withstand major (or even minor) stresses and changes. Just like people.

Be aware, Travellers Palms are NOT giant bird of paradise (Strelizia Nicholae). Two different things. Do NOT do the advice below if it is a travellers palm. If it is, you'll likely kill it. If it IS a giant bird, your best bet is to actually cut it back to the ground. The rhizome/root can be divided like a banana plant. I've tried to move bananas and BoP before (they're both similar herbaceous plants) and by far the most successful where where I cut back most of it, perhaps leaving only some very small new plants coming out of the root. Just do a google search for "Propogating Bird of Paradise" and you'll see how to divide the roots after they get cut back. With a root ball that large, I wouldn't be surprised if it's back bigger than the house within a year or so, even from a full ground level cut back if it gets enough water, sun and fertilizer. aiki

I think the house itself is charming, inviting and unpretentious, but because of its symmetry, it needs balance. Formal pruning has its place, and looks great in some contexts, but is way overused/abused in situations where something more naturalistic/lush would be far more gorgeous. I would love to be able to fast-forward that photo to see all the cool juxtapositions of plants you'll end up with to provide the balance without the lollipop pretentiousness. I love native plants also, so I hope you'll be able to work some into your plant mix. I was surprised there aren't move native evergreen shrubs for the PNW, but I'd love to be able to grow Vaccinium ovatum here. The blueberries I grow are all deciduous... I'd love to see less lawn in that fast-forwarded photo also, but that does take some time if it's DIY landscaping. That old camellia could be moved to provide structure elsewhere in the yard, and if you love the japonisme look, you might even move the camellia closer to the Japanese Maple, and consider a cloud-pruned shrub or two in the mix. Shape-pruning doesn't have to be formal. And/or a smaller Japanese Maple in a contrasting color? Camellia roots tend to be fairly shallow, so unless the plant is jammed right up against the porch, it's not likely to be a threat to the house, nor likely to be damaged by the house. The shape of the plant is- IMO- a greater threat to the plant's health since the lack of light and air is likely to promote disease. If you do think it's too close, I hope you'll consider moving it. Once you go to the trouble of having it properly removed, it's not much more work to dig a hole elsewhere that will fill in an empty space in the yard, and that camellia will really look great with some thinning and a little time to grow back out in a more natural way. Good luck with whatever you do... I'm sure it will look so much better after a few years of judicious planting decisions. Virginia

Commercial nurseries have big Tree Spades that can handle good sized trees. It may cost a bundle, but I am sure it can be done. However, you need to be sure that you have a proper place to replant them or you will have wasted your money.

You can also prune them severely. It will take years for them to reach that size again.

This is an area way beyond my experience , since I've not researched how well camellias transplant in general, even for very small easily moved ones. I do know some plants are notoriouslly sensitive to transplanting , no matter how carefully its' done, but I'd guess with proper care success could be very possible. I'd add as well, if you have sufficient time, you might consider prior prepartions for moving them perhaps a year in advance or longer, since some trees and shrubs are root pruned far in advance of transplanting, so much more compact and well branched rootballs are developed in advance of moving the plants. I'd guess, that could help, if you have the time and don't mind the extra effort involved. Not sure that technique is used though in the case of moving camellias however?
