Holy Christmas to me!!

Look what my husband got for me. He brought it back from NYC. The tag reads Notocactus prolifera. This is beyond massive. It has over 50 heads and weighs a ton. It measures almost 13 inches across. Check out this bad boy!

I had to take the picture from about 2' away just to fit it all in. The plant is in a 10" pot and needs to be put into a 12" pot.

WOW Props to your husband! That is a beauty. Look at all those spines. Good luck repotting that thing, you'll need it! : ) Congrats!

A true monster of a plant.

Imagine what it will be like when it decides to bloom!!
You'll have to stand even further away to fit it all in :)

The list is now updated on my trade list... but please bear with me. My family and friends aren't as quick as the rest of us about getting their seeds. After things start leaving, I'll get a packet count of each kind. Its not easy to deal with these. I have a 18 month old daughter who wants to help me, so I can only do so much while she's napping :) A few times now I've screamed as I saw her dip her hands in the box.... I really don't want to have to re-sort them all. I'm going to limit this first round of requests to those of you who have already commented above, and in order to keep my sanity, I'm also limiting this first round to 5 packets per person (Mone, you are the exception to that number) I will do another round of requests after I get all these sorted and sent out. So, everyone who commented above, and who want something off the list, send me an email and I will send you my snail mail address. On a side note-- Michelle, I already knew about your program with the hospital. I remember reading about it here, and a another GW member had already contacted me asking me to send you the leftovers. So, I was going to surprise you with an anonymous box of seeds, but I'm fairly certain you'll know where they came from now ;)

Once when my kids were little my son came running outside and said Mommy there is a HUGH rat in your bedroom, now it being daylight I am thinking he just THINKS he sees something and it is the 'lighting' or something but NOOOO he INSISTED there is something in my bedroom. MY fiancee is about to leave so I mozey my keyster in the house to my bedroom and GOOD GRIEF IT'S A POSSUM IN MY ROOM! And it is on my dresser at the moment. I do a quick 180 and run out to chase SO down and tell him he better be getting his hinney in here to get this thing OUT of my bedroom. He gets the broom and had removed the screen from the bedroom window HOPING it will jump out, but nope, it turns ever so slowly and WALKS back across the dresser, onto the windowsill, onto the headboard of my bed and disappears! OMG WHERE DID THE CRITTER GO???? Albeit it was a baby BUT it WAS a possum none the less, turns out there is a hole in the floor under our bed the little critter crawled through to come in. A mama possum had set-up a home underneath the mobile home and had actually gotten into the walls and maybe the ceiling too, I heard noises there ALL the time. I kept telling him SOMETHING BIG was in the walls, ceiling, FLOOR, under the trailer and HE always said it was stray cats I KNEW with the size of the sound I kept hearing it wasn't a cat! At any rate when the baby possum made it's appearance he finally figured out that was the sound (the mama possum) I had been hearing, he patched the hole so no more would come in and when we moved out I am assuming mama possum and more babies lived there long after we did! I am SOOOO glad I am not the only one who had a possum INSIDE their home! I just thought it was CREEPY!!! It was a cute little baby, but NOT IN MY BEDROOM! And it darn near terrified my son, he really thought it was a LARGE rat...poor kid, guess I would have too at 6 years old! He really wasn't far off either huh? :) Fran

The church musicians are playing carols. We sing some pretty obscure carols during our services, but we all warmed up on Christmas Eve with some beautiful old favorites. It's the one time we all sing in tune, lol. I also love the simplicity of our church. Many Episcopal churches have a lot of "stuff" to them, however, we only have what has been gifted to us. I find it keeps us focused on what is important. GGG

I have been a GW member since before the turn of the century!! (golly, that sounds really old, LOL!!) Posting hasn't changed a jot since then other than the presentation or look has altered slightly and all the forums that were present before the acquisition by Houzz are also still here. It just got a whole lot easier to post photos. Once you become familiar with the new "look" you shouldn't have any issues finding your way around or posting and responding. I will say I find the smartphone app difficult to use but easy-peasy on a laptop or tablet.

I am so envious! That's a very impressive clump! You'll have an amazing display when it blooms, and the berries afterward will look equally impressive. Kudos to your hubby!

Monster! But what is it? There are two, possibly three, plants that might be called Notocactus prolifera? The name Notocactus prolifera was erected in 1981 for what was Wigginsia prolifera, but is thought to just be a clumping form of Notocactus (or Parodia) langsdorfii. Or there is Notocactus scopa v prolifera and at least one other Parodia species with a porlifera variety.

By the looks of that monster, even in a twelve inch pot you'll have fun getting the potting mix in around the plant.
I'm agree about the ID, I think Jordi's right.
I have a couple of small plants that I bought from cactus plant a while back under the name N. scopa v albispina

I have a couple of small plants that I bought from "CactusLand" a while back under the name N. scopa v albispina which is indeed a much branching form of scopa ssp succinea. Check out the link.

I agree with ya'll, its a N. scopa v prolifera. Yes, Jerry did very well this year. He also got me a couple peices of swarovski crystal. I have been collecting swarovski for about 20 years now. CP, this is going to be a real job moving it into it's new home. Jerry is still plucking pokies out of his hands....poor guy. He didn't wrap it though, he set it on the table by the sliding glass door. When I woke up Christmas morning I got my coffee and proceeded to the table. When I saw the plant I dropped my coffee and just starred at it. I turned around and was going to jump on him while he was sleeping but he was standing right behind me. (He scared the kajeebies right out of me.) He wanted to see my reaction. What a sweetheart ain't he. Thats my Christmas store...what's yours?
