Saucers for whiskey barrels?
Comments (19)Because I'm limited to a 24-inch diameter, I can't do the real whiskey barrels. Thus I'm looking at faux, non-wood ones. As for Kentucky: Maybe they find grounds for marrying within the family in the Bible? After all, Salome could have said "Hey, Uncle Dad" to Herod before requesting John the Baptist's head on a silver platter. Okay, so Herod was technically "Uncle Step Dad" . . . but given the unpleasant outcome of the story, surely we should extrapolate a moral about keeping uncles and fathers separate. And yes, 1st cousins, really. But since we live in Utah, though, I probably shouldn't be talking. We're all polygamists out here, after all -- even non-Mormons such as myself! -Crazy...See MoreA Whiskey Barrel Planter
Comments (10)So pretty. My wooden barrels also fell apart, nonacook. I was visiting my daughter in Kansas City and at Costco they had hard plastic ones. So I bought a pair and put flowers in them. I think I will add birdhouses now, thanks to your idea, kirkus. Are those watermelon million bells, perennials? They are beautiful!...See Morewinter a perennial in faux whiskey barrel
Comments (7)I have a wooden whiskey barrel and a clay chimney tile, both of which have ribbon grass (a plant too invasive to allow to roam the garden IMO) that has survived many years. I wasn't able to overwinter bulbs, hosta, or chrysanthemums, among other plants I tried, despite the planters being buried in snow for the majority of the winter. If you want to have your zone show up with your name in the posts: Go to Your Houzz in upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums along with a link to find your zone. If you add info on your state or the nearest large city you will get even better information since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures. Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing....See MoreLightweight whiskey barrel planters?
Comments (5)There are now some decent looking looking plastic whiskey barrel planters that are lighter than the traditional ones. They still get heavy when filled with soil. We fill part of the planters with empty plastic containers of various types/sizes (quart plastic milk bottle, etc.) before adding soil so they are lighter. The trick is to make sure you have enough soil to grow what you want to plant, places between the containers with some soil and to remember you need to water more often than barrels without the plastic filler. We have also moved them using a hand truck. It is a little tricky to get them up and balanced and three people helps to keep them that way....See Morehopflower
