Would like to find an evergreen vine
Comments (12)Dear organic_gardenhag 10, "Rose is a rose is a rose," is a quotation attributed to Gertrude Stein. I'm going to modify that quotation by saying, "The Lady Banks rose is a rose is a rose," its Latin name being _Rosa banksiae_. As you said, it's virtually thornless and is evergreen; however, it is as much a rose as its thorniest cousins. With a profusion of beautiful white single, golden-centered flowers, the evergreen Cherokee Rose, Georgia's state flower, would be an excellent trellis-choice. Blooming during azalea season, the Cherokee Rose is native to China. It's thorny as all get-out and, thus, would be an excellent deterrent to cat burglars, home invaders, and other vermin. During the Antebellum Era, planters and yeoman farmers used the Cherokee Rose as natural, impenetrable fencing to keep rogue livestock confined to the pasture....See Morevine to cover chainlink fence
Comments (5)I believe there are only 2 species of Aristolochia (Dutchman's pipevine) that are hardy to New England, A. macrophylla and A. tomentosa. They are a fast growing perennial vine, but I don't think they're evergreen. I started A. tomentosa from seed last year (winter 2008). I got 5 healthy seedlings and potted them in small pots. They made it through the winter 2009 fine, but they are still in pots! I wish I had a fence to grow them on, haven't figured out where to put them yet. Sigh....See MoreEvergreen vine for fence in shade
Comments (7)Evergreen vines for shade are not as common as one would hope - in fact, not all that many fully evergreen vines available for this area at all. Clematis armandii is one of the more popular and common selections and while very shade tolerant, you will not get the profusion of blossoms in no direct sun as in some sun. Also considered marginal in zone 7, where it can experience a lot of dieback and browning of foliage in a rough winter. Ditto for the evergreen hydrangeas - marginal in zone 7. You could try akebia but it is most often termed as "semi-evergreen". And other than ivy, which is a huge no-no in this area, there's not much else out there in the way of a vining evergreen. Have you considered a clumping bamboo?...See MoreKid friendly evergreen vine to cover privacy fence
Comments (4)You know, any vine that has flowers will have bees and bugs. Heck, the white clover blooms that come with our yard (no matter how much we fight it) attract more bees than anything else. I used to be terrified of bugs when I started gardening. You know, work a second, scream and skreech a minute. I've gotten over it somewhat. I even like seeing snakes in the gardens I just don't touch them. Oh, my akebia only blooms for about 2 weeks in the spring yellow blooms that smell like honeysuckle. It been there for about 8 to 10 years and I've never had to control it from spreading and I've never seen new ones sprouting in my woods. Maybe because it's a cultivar of the chocolate vine and not the original species plant. Come to think of it, it was having kids that got me over my bug-Itis. We have bug id books and critter id books and the kids have become quite good at researching and id-ing lots of things. Maybe that would be a better option than trying to garden without bees....See Morestacian
