It's A Girl! And A Boy! And An Egg!!

Yesterday, my first BST of the year eclosed, a darling girl. It took 13 days compared to the 9 days it was taking later in the season last year. Then I had a boy eclose today after 12 days. While I was outside, looking over at my parsley, I found an egg! I think. It is just one solitary egg. You would think if someone was going to go through the trouble of flying up to my balcony they would leave more than one egg, but this is my first ever wild egg.

Ain't it the truth. I have one entirely empty bed in my yard (7 years now). Visitors always ask me what I'm going to do with it. And I reply, "I'm waiting for inspiration to strike". They always look at me funny. But you know, sometimes the creative process cannot be rushed. When you see something you really truly like, you just know that eventually you'll find the right spot for it. I LOVE that gate. So unique, and the color of it...WOW.

No, leave the unopened flowers alone. If I'm remembering right from my veg crops class (from thirty years ago), you can refrigerate the pollen flower, and use it the next day on another open female flower. I've read it's best to pollinate squash early in the morning, soon after the flowers open. As to the brassica's, it's actually close to the time to start them from seed- around August 1, to get a late fall crop. Or you can buy plants in about a month to set out. Still, you will need to be hyper-vigilant to keep cabbage butterflies from laying eggs on the plants. Supposedly you can buy lightweight floating row cover fabric from nurseries to protect the plants from insects, but I wonder it the cost is worth it for as little as you plant, you don't want to wind up with 5 dollar a head cabbage! To be honest, I gave up on trying to grow them long ago, it was too much trouble. If it wasn't worms, it was aphids, sigh. Do you like snap or sugar peas? they get planted about mid September, after the last hot spell of summer, and are foolproof once they get a few inches tall, so snails cant eat them in one gulp. Beets, chard, potatoes, onions, garlic and lettuce tend to be easy. Carrots need sandy soil to do well, and radishes in the home garden usually wind up too hot to eat, but they're fun to grow. Still, don't be afraid to do what you want, and see what happens, it's the best way to learn.

Found this... Tom vs Hen: In days past hens gave you more white meat to dark meat. With recent selective breeding Hens (female) and Toms (males) have about the same ratio of white to dark meat (mostly white meat). The difference these days is the size. Oh, WOW! Congrats on all those little ones coming at the same time! My boy&girl twin grankids just turned 6 and it's being SUCH an experience seeing from day 1 that he's "such a boy" and she's "such a girl" even though they're the same age & raised by the same parents. The "twin thing" is soooo special (they have an older brother and sister.) They had their own language before they were speaking ours, and they cooked up an escape plan when they were barely one (talking in their "language" for a while before they both bolted in opposite directions while this Grandma was watching them. . . .) And then you throw their same-aged cousin into the mix. . . .It's gonna keep you on your toes!

Well, I have to be honest. The garden feels like a dismal failure. All of my BSTs have been found at nurseries and raised indoors. I release them from the garden and they cant wait to fly away fast enough. Lol. Actually, the girl hung around for about five minutes. I am having my doubts about the egg. It sure looks like an egg but why would anyone fly up and lay a single egg? There was more than enough parsley to support several eggs.

I know what you mean, I have 4 dill plants, 3 fennel plants, 6 pasley, and 2 celantro. and a BST came in the yard and layed only 2 eggs on one of the parsley, and thats it. I have checked the other plants over and over, but nothing was layed on them.
than I found 3 BST cats(just tiny ones) at the nursery.

If you are raising the ones you found on your host plants, Gwynne, I have found that once they know where host plants are, they will return to that same spot, year after year.

So that's the good news!

Actualy, I raise them indoors. I even took the egg indoors so it wouldnt disappear. I know that parsley will hold up for quite some time if I put it in water and I have covered the sides with foil so the little one cant drown. That is if it is actually a BST egg and hatches.
